Global U University of Utah’s Office for Global Engagement. We connect, inform & support global initiatives.

MISSION AND VISION STATEMENT

Mission Statement
OGE provides campus-wide leadership and coordination in support of University of Utah global initiatives, partnerships, and programs. Our mission is to facilitate transformative global learning, innovative scholarship, and cross-cultural engagement opportunities for all students and faculty, and to promote intercultural competence and understanding.

OGE provides the infrastructure for the University to become a hub of collaboration across academic disciplines and with partnering organizations to transform teaching and learning, scholarship, and service in the context of addressing pressing issues in a complex and interconnected world. Vision Statement
Our vision is for the University of Utah to become a global leader in transformative learning, scholarship, and cross-cultural engagement. Through the strong commitment and vast expertise of our faculty, staff, and students, the University seeks to generate new knowledge and advance understanding of the world in the 21st century. Core Values
Opportunities for Global Learning and Scholarship: We believe that global learning is at the heart of the U’s future as a research and teaching university. Every student whether domestic or international, must have the opportunity to develop the skills needed to live, learn, and work in a global context and multicultural society. Every faculty member should be provided the opportunity to engage individually, as well as with students and colleagues, in cross-cultural teaching, scholarship and engagement that advances knowledge and understanding of the world in the 21st century. Responsibility to Promote Intercultural Competence and Understanding: We believe that it is the responsibility of the U through it leaders, academic units, research institutes, and centers to promote an understanding that every culture has value, and that cultural diversity as a component of the academic experience is an asset to engaging in an interconnected and complex world. Make a Difference: We believe that as Utah’s flagship university and an internationally recognized institution of higher education, the U must engage in teaching and research activities that make a difference in the lives of people within the state, nation, and around the world. Making a difference is a shared responsibility that cuts across traditional academic silos and requires a unique contribution from every discipline on campus. Collaboration as a Catalyst for Growth and Change: We believe that expanding opportunities for global learning and scholarship, gaining intercultural competence and understanding, and making a difference in the global community will only be achieved through an ethic of collaboration both within the university and in partnership with other institutions of higher learning, government agencies, and non-governmental entities. Tapping into the collective wisdom of those committed to global engagement is the most effective means to achieve the desired results.

The University of Utah Office for Global Engagement (OGE) officially welcomed the English Language Institute () into its organizational structure on April 2, 2026, marking a significant step in expanding support for international students and strengthening the university’s global mission.

Founded in 1990, ELI serves as the university’s intensive English language program, providing preparatory language instruction for international students, visitors, and members of the local community. Through online courses, evening classes, and immersive academic programs, ELI helps students build the language skills needed for academic and professional success.

For faculty, leading a Learning Abroad program can be memorable, fulfilling, and add a whole new dimension to your teaching or research. But getting a new program off the ground can come with some challenges.

Before developing your course, sign up to participate in the Faculty Fellows program—a new offering developed by the Learning Abroad office to guide faculty through the development of new international experiences.

Learn more about how to join Faculty Fellows at https://learningabroad.utah.edu/faculty-staff/lead-a-program.php

P.S. And for those already in the process of developing a program: Friendly reminder that those proposals are due June 1, 2026.

The views in London, Pittsburgh, Pasadena, and Honolulu all looked comically similar to our intrepid recruiter this year as he hit the road to over 16 cities in 6 months.

Though he didn't get to see too much of each city, he had a blast connecting with prospective students and sharing what makes the experience at our global campus in Incheon, South Korea so distinctive.

We're excited to meet the new students this fall who choose to join us after attending these admissions fairs, and grateful for the energy, dedication, and global reach that continue to expand our community. Go !

We love what director Anastasia Fynn had to say at last week's graduation celebration for international students:

"There is a particular kind of courage it takes to pursue an education far from home. To sit in classrooms where the cultural references are unfamiliar. To build community from the ground up. To learn how to call a place home that once felt foreign. You did not just move through this experience, you transformed it. Every perspective you shared, every question you raised from outside the assumed center, made this university more thoughtful, more honest, and more complete."

The presence of international students on campus is invaluable. Thanks for bringing all that makes you YOU to the U! We are lucky to be part of your journey.

Cheers to what's next!

(Pssst...Remember to keep in touch and let us know of your fabulous next steps through !)
