University of Utah David Eccles School of Business The David Eccles School of Business has risen to the forefront of business excellence and each year e The same year that Utah was admitted as the 45th U.S.

state (1896), the University of Utah began formally educating students in the ways of business. Utah is the Beehive State after all, and Utahns are known being industrious and self-reliant. Originally, business students took classes through the University of Utah’s Economics & Sociology Department. But soon it became clear that the study of business deserved a school all its own. The School of Commerce & Finance was founded in 1917, and in that first year, 126 students enrolled. It’s no surprise that nearly one hundred years later, the number of enrolled students has increased more than 25-fold. Today the David Eccles School of Business has risen to the forefront of business excellence and each year educates nearly 4,500 graduate and undergraduate students in five departments.

At the 2026 Salesforce IDEAthon Challenge, Eccles students used Salesforce CRM and AI to tackle real-world customer experience problems, build working solutions, and pitch their ideas to industry judges.

Congrats to Owen Slye, our October 2026 Student of the Month! 🎉

A senior double majoring in Accounting and Finance with an emphasis in Fintech, Owen has spent all four years of his undergrad with ASUU. He started on the Campus Events Board, running logistics for Rail Jam and Grand Kerfuffle, and now serves as Director of Finance. He's also an Eccles Ambassador and Eccles Connection Guide, interned with American Express's Internal Audit Group, and will join EY as an audit intern next summer.

His advice for students: "Take the leap and get involved early. Joining clubs is how you build a network and find your passions."

Another sign of the Eccles School’s continued ascent.

The Cu***ng Foundation has committed $7.5 million to establish the Ian M. Cu***ng Endowed Deanship at the David Eccles School of Business.

This commitment also unlocks $2.5 million in matching funds from the Emma Eccles Jones Foundation to create a $10 million deanship package, among the largest in the country for a business school, and establishes the Emma Eccles Jones Presidential Endowed Chair.

The endowed deanship honors the legacy of Ian Cu***ng, a legendary Utah business leader, while providing flexible capital that will allow the Eccles School to invest in bold ideas, seize emerging opportunities, and move with speed.

We are grateful to David Cu***ng and the Cu***ng Foundation for this extraordinary investment in the future of the Eccles School.

We're proud to spotlight Paul Hu as our October 2026 Researcher of the Month. 🎓

Hu holds the E.R. Dumke Jr. Presidential Endowed Chair and is a Professor in the David Eccles School of Business's Department of Operations and Information Systems. His research explores how technology — from AI to data analytics — is transforming health care and business. His work has appeared in leading academic journals, and he received the Eccles School's Doctoral Faculty Teaching Award in 2025.

Congratulations to David Bauman on being named Managing Director and Market Leader for CBRE’s Utah market!

Since 2024, David has led the Ivory-Boyer Real Estate Center (IBREC) in connecting our students, faculty, alumni and industry professionals to shape the future of real estate. He will continue in that role as he leads CBRE’s Salt Lake City and Lehi offices.

David earned his BA in Finance and MBA here at the University of Utah and has taught in our Master of Real Estate Development (MRED) program for the past decade. We’re grateful for his continued leadership and proud to have him at Eccles.

In Bloomberg Businessweek’s 2026–27 Best Business Schools Rankings, the University of Utah - David Eccles School of Business climbed six spots to #44 nationally and #18 among public business schools.

Eccles also earned standout rankings in two areas at the heart of the student experience:
#4 in Entrepreneurship nationally
#13 in Learning nationally
#18 among public business schools
Up 6 spots to #44 overall

These results reflect the strength of the Full-Time MBA at Eccles, with Entrepreneurship and Learning rankings that exceed many top-ranked MBA programs across the country and an overall ranking that continues to move upward.
