Grateful for the opportunity to team up with Teton County Search and Rescue this week to teach backcountry life threat assessment at the hangar.

It’s always inspiring to connect with a community that’s so committed to showing up prepared and ready to help when it matters most. Proud of our Wilderness Medicine Fellowship crew for helping share practical skills that can make a real difference out there.

🌲 Fellow Spotlight 🌲

We’re proud to highlight one of our past fellows, Hannah Loewenberg, who is now a new member of the team at Great Smoky Mountains National Park. She’s currently training to join BUSAR as a new specialty member and is also volunteering with training and education for the park.

Hannah’s work is a great example of the impact wilderness medicine training can have—supporting search and rescue, education, and high-quality care in some of our most iconic and challenging environments.

Her team was also recently featured in The New Yorker, showcasing the incredible work being done in the Smokies. We’re thrilled to see Hannah continuing to lead, teach, and serve in wilderness and austere settings.

👏 So proud of you, Hannah!

Dr. McIntosh presented research he worked on with Teton County SAR. The research was about the efficacy of ventilation with a bag-valve vs. a simple mechanical ventilator of a patient with an I-Gel airway during short-haul helicopter evacuation. The research was presented at ICAR (International Commission for Alpine Rescue) 2025 Congress in Jackson Hole, WY.

🌲 Wilderness Medicine Fellowship x ACEP Hike 🌲
This week, Dr. TJ Hartridge and Dr. Scott McIntosh led ACEP attendees on a refreshing hike to Donut Falls in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Along the trail, we explored topics of hydration, dehydration, altitude physiology, and field fluid resuscitation—all while sipping on wilderness-inspired mocktails designed to encourage acclimatization and hydration.

💧 The EMS Elixir – our twist on the WHO oral rehydration solution
🍒 The Altitude Acclimator – beetroot + tart cherry juice for circulation and recovery
🍵 The Forest Tonic – a green tea–infused recharge

It was an excellent blend of science, community, and the outdoors. Thanks to all who joined us for learning, laughter, and a little wilderness medicine in action!

The Teton County Search & Rescue team, the University of Utah Wilderness Medicine Fellowship and EM Residency, and our student from the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine are teaming up to push the limits of prehospital care.
We’re investigating airway management in Search and Rescue operations in austere environments—testing i-gel displacement, and comparing the O2 CareVent vs. bag-valve mask during simulated and live short-haul operations with a helicopter.
This collaboration is about advancing safety, science, and skills in the most demanding rescue scenarios. 🌄🩺

Our wilderness fellows this week had the amazing experience of working with Search and Rescue up in the Grand Tetons! They were involved with training during a mock cave rescue and helped work on a research project spearheaded by one of our medical students involving short-haul airway devices. They also had the chance to watch a training session where the SAR team worked with Jackson Hole Mountain Patrol to pick up a mock patient from the side of a Via Ferrata!
