🏔️ Wilderness Medicine Fellows in the Field!

Our Wilderness Medicine fellows, Dr. Megan Eubank and Dr. Ray Nokovich, recently attended and spoke at a hands-on symposium focused on technical rope rescue and patient care in mountain environments.

The two-day workshop brought together mountain rescue professionals to build and reinforce technical rope rescue skills while focusing on an essential part of rescue: keeping both patients and rescuers safe throughout the process.

Participants worked through hands-on techniques for:

🧗 High-angle and low-angle rope rescue systems
🪢 Technical rigging techniques and system setup
🩺 Incorporating patient care into complex rescue scenarios
⚖️ Understanding the physics behind safe and efficient rigging
🏔️ Adapting rescue systems to challenging terrain
🤝 Team-based decision-making during technical rescues

A major focus of the workshop was understanding the “why” behind rescue systems—using critical thinking and principles of physics to select rigging techniques that are safe, efficient, timely, and as gentle as possible for both the patient and rescuers.

We’re proud to have Dr. Eubank and Dr. Nokovich representing our Wilderness Medicine Fellowship and sharing their expertise with professionals working on the front lines of mountain rescue. 👏

🏔️ Wilderness Medicine in the Dolomites!

Our very own Dr. Scott McIntosh recently taught and attended an International Wilderness Life Support (IWLS) course during a MedTreks expedition in the Dolomites.

The course focused on an important question for clinicians working outside the hospital: How do we provide effective patient care when resources are limited, evacuation may be delayed, and the environment itself becomes part of the challenge?

Through hands-on, scenario-based learning, participants practiced skills and explored topics including:

🩺 Patient assessment in austere environments
⛑️ C-spine stabilization and patient movement
❄️ Hypothermia management and environmental illness
🩹 Wound care when resources are limited
🦴 Splinting and management of orthopedic injuries
🌊 Ocean and water medicine
🌎 Travel medicine and global health principles
🎒 Building and using wilderness medical kits
🚁 Evacuation decision-making in remote environments

Rather than simply learning these concepts in a classroom, participants put their knowledge into practice through realistic wilderness scenarios and simulations designed to prepare clinicians for the challenges of providing care far from traditional medical resources.

A great example of how wilderness medicine education can combine practical skills, clinical decision-making, and real-world experiences in challenging environments.

We’re thrilled to celebrate Graham as he steps into the role of Incoming President of the Wilderness Medical Society!

It’s an incredible honor and a well-deserved recognition of his dedication to wilderness medicine, education, and the community that makes this field so special.

As Stephanie Lareau passes the leadership “ice axe” to Graham, we couldn’t be more excited to see where he takes the WMS next. We know he’ll do an amazing job!

A huge thank you to our Fellowship Director, Dr. Scott McIntosh for giving an outstanding lecture about our Wilderness Medicine Fellowship!

From "Sea to Summit to Sky," Dr. McIntosh shared his incredible experiences and expertise across a wide range of wilderness environments, highlighting the unique challenges of practicing medicine everywhere from the ocean to the highest peaks—and even in the air.

We're so grateful for the opportunity to learn from leaders who bring real-world experience, passion, and adventure into the classroom. Thank you, Dr. McIntosh, for inspiring our fellows and reminding us that wilderness medicine knows no boundaries! 🏔️🌊✈️

Dr. Scott McIntosh provided education to the Ruapehu Alpine Rescue Organization (https://www.facebook.com/RaroACR/) on the North Island of New Zealand on May 2. RARO works in the shadow of Mt. Ruapehu which is an active volcano within Tongariro National Park. The only glaciers on New Zealand’s North Island are on its slopes.

🌲 Fellow Spotlight 🌲

We’re proud to highlight one of our past fellows, Hannah Loewenberg, who is now a new member of the team at Great Smoky Mountains National Park. She’s currently training to join BUSAR as a new specialty member and is also volunteering with training and education for the park.

Hannah’s work is a great example of the impact wilderness medicine training can have—supporting search and rescue, education, and high-quality care in some of our most iconic and challenging environments.

Her team was also recently featured in The New Yorker, showcasing the incredible work being done in the Smokies. We’re thrilled to see Hannah continuing to lead, teach, and serve in wilderness and austere settings.
