Texas A&M AgriLife uses livestock guardian dogs (LGDs) as part of our routine sheep and goat predator management. Our goal is to increase the understanding and use of LGD by cooperating with the small ruminant ranching community to develop research and educational activities that reduce livestock-wildlife conflict. The purpose of this page is to share information pertaining to our program.

Tooth & Claw Thursday: Hogs During Lambing and Kidding
Feral hogs are opportunistic. Birthing fluids, afterbirth, weakened newborns, and feed can attract hogs to lambing and kidding areas.
LGD Tip: Clean up birthing areas when practical, protect feed, and avoid placing lambing or kidding pastures near heavy hog travel corridors.

Wet Nose Wednesday - ๐Ÿพ Does Your Dog Have Mange? ๐Ÿพ
Mange is a skin condition caused by microscopic mites and can lead to hair loss, itching, and skin irritation.
โœ… Sarcoptic Mange (Scabies): Highly contagious and causes intense itching. Requires prompt treatment
โœ… Demodectic Mange: Usually not contagious and often linked to a weakened immune system. Often seen in younger or immune-compromised LGDs.
The best way to control mange is through proper veterinary diagnosis and treatment. Early intervention can prevent severe skin infections and discomfort. If you notice excessive scratching, hair loss, or crusty skin, contact your veterinarian right away.

Fun Fact Friday (Dog Treat Edition) - Smell Is More Important Than Taste!
Dogs often decide whether they want a treat based on its aroma rather than its flavor. Their sense of smell is estimated to be 10,000 to 100,000 times more sensitive than ours, depending on the breed.

Tooth & Claw Thursday: Hog Control
Feral hog control works best when it targets groups, not just individuals.
Trapping, pre-baiting, and coordinated control efforts are often more effective than occasional shooting.
LGD Tip: Keep LGDs away from active traps and bait sites to prevent injury or accidental capture.

Wet Nose Wednesday - ๐Ÿพ Healthy Feet Keep LGDs on Patrol ๐Ÿพ
A livestock guardian dog's feet are its most important tools. Daily movement across pastures, rocky terrain, and rough ground can take a toll.
โœ… Check paws regularly for cuts, cracks, and thorns
โœ… Trim nails as needed to prevent splitting or injury
โœ… Keep bedding areas clean and dry
โœ… Watch for limping or excessive licking of the feet
โœ… Address injuries before they become infections
Healthy feet help LGDs stay active, comfortable, and ready to protect your livestock.
