🌱 Growing health at the Kate Marmion School of Public Health! 🌱

We're excited to launch our new community garden! Thank you to Gardopia Gardens for building the garden beds and supplying starter fruits and vegetables.

This project is funded by an American Heart Association grant through the Community Engagement for Building Capacity, Trust, and Ownership of Research (CONNECTOR) program—supporting heart-healthy living through nutrition.

Once fully established, our garden will produce ~100 pounds of fresh food annually!

Kate Marmion School of Public Health faculty, staff, and leadership took a field trip to the Museo del Westside to learn more about the rich history, culture, and everyday experiences of San Antonio’s working-class community on the historic West Side.

By listening, learning, and engaging with our neighbors, we deepen our connection to the community and strengthen our commitment to meaningful service.

Thank you to Museo del Westside for preserving and celebrating the stories that continue to shape San Antonio.

More than 250 dental screenings; more than 445 oral health demonstrations; more than 2,000 dental hygiene kits distributed.

Hundreds of blood pressure, blood glucose and BMI screenings.

At the Spurs Sports & Entertainment Back to School Bash, UT Health San Antonio faculty, staff and students brought health education and hands-on experiences to San Antonio-area families preparing for the new school year.

Across dentistry, medicine, health professions, public health and health promotion research, our university community helped families access resources, learn about healthy habits and discover the many ways health care professionals make a difference.

Growing a healthier community starts by planting seeds of possibility. 🪴

Thanks to the partnership between the City of San Antonio - Municipal Government and the Kate Marmion School of Public Health, six fruit trees donated by the Urban Forestry team now have a home on our campus, laying the foundation for a future community garden and orchard.

With the support of our facilities team, the fig, pomegranate, peach, apricot, olive and lime trees were planted to create a space that will inspire learning, community connections and wellness. Eventually, this growing orchard will provide over 100 lbs of food annually and represents what is possible when community partners come together. We look forward to seeing it become a beautiful new resource. 🧡

Rogie Royce Z. Carandang, PhD, faculty in the Dept. of Health, Behavior, and Society was featured on Texas Public Radio's Science & Medicine podcast! Nearly HALF of Texas counties are considered maternity care deserts, meaning many healthcare workers lack training to respond to emergencies like maternal cardiac arrest.
