Meet Makayla Hernandez, an Undergraduate Public History major whose powerful research is reshaping how we understand slavery in San Antonio.

Makayla has been accepted to present her project, "Libertatis Cunabula: Slavery in San Antonio Project," at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) this April.
Her work dives deep into Bexar County Tax Assessment Records (1837–1862), over 1,200 pages of primary sources, revealing the true scale and human reality of slavery in a region often dismissed or overlooked.

Through careful transcription and analysis, Makayla uncovers:
- 11,096 enslaved people accounted for
- 2,397 enslavers identified
- Major Texas historical figures involved in enslavement
- A striking number of enslaved children under 18
Her project challenges long‑held myths, highlights erased histories, and emphasizes why evidence‑based storytelling matters.

We're proud to spotlight her work and celebrate her contribution to uncovering the full, honest history of San Antonio.
