Experiential learning plays an important role in preparing future educators. On February 19, students in EDUC 3420: Child and Adolescent Development Worldwide, taught by Dr. Laura Allen, had the opportunity to visit the University Presbyterian Children's Center.

The center is both National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) accredited and a certified Nature-Explore School, offering students a firsthand look at the four elements of a high-quality preschool environment. Experiences like this allow our students to connect course concepts with real-world practice and observe how developmentally appropriate learning environments support young children.

Grateful for community partners who help bring learning beyond the classroom and into meaningful practice.

We’re excited to share that two of our faculty members, Dr. Rocio Delgado and Dr. Katherine Vinton, are presenting at the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE)!

Their presentation, “Bodies as Texts: Arts-Integrated Literacy for Multilingual Learners,” centers on student identity, family connections, and culturally sustaining teaching practices. Through writing, visual storytelling, and collaborative dialogue, this work promotes positive self-image, community connection, and meaningful learning in elementary classrooms.

We’re proud to see their work shared on a national platform!

Congratulations to Dr. Katherine Espinoza on her newly published article, Bailando Historias: Abuelita Epistemologies and Cultural Resistance in Education.

Through embodied learning and shared cultural practice, students are invited to become co-creators of knowledge, deepening their understanding of culture, history, and identity.

This work also calls for an expanded definition of literacy—one that honors oral traditions, relational knowledge, and movement, recognizing folklórico not as an extracurricular activity, but as a transformative educational practice.

Throwback Thursday to our Second Annual Tamalada!

Last month, we had the pleasure of welcoming students, faculty, and community members to a full day celebrating Mexican American foodways and culture.

The day began with a special presentation by Ms. Gloria Caramillo Vasquez, who shared the origins and history of corn and explained how it was traditionally prepared, setting the stage for the tamale-making lesson with Hawthorne Elementary students. The event also included an open walk-in program featuring tamale tasting and preparation, along with a multimedia exhibit highlighting Mexican cookbooks from UTSA’s Mexican Cookbooks Collection.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this event such a meaningful celebration of tradition, learning, and community.
