Associate Professor Cathy Torrington Eaton, PhD, CCC-SLP, is the new chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders following the retirement last month of founding chair Fang-Ling Lu, PhD, CCC-SLP, FASAHP.

The department's medically focused Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology program has established a strong reputation since welcoming its first cohort of students in 2018.

Last week, the School of Health Professions and UT San Antonio leadership celebrated the many contributions of David Shelledy, PhD, RRT, RPT, FAARC, FASAHP, who is retiring this month after serving as dean for 12 years.

Bridgett Piernik-Yoder, PhD, OTR, FAOTA, is serving as interim dean effective Sept. 1. Piernik-Yoder is vice dean for academic and faculty affairs and a professor with tenure in the Department of Occupational Therapy.

A national search in underway for a permanent dean for the school, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Being heard can make a difference for people living with aphasia, a condition that can affect a person’s ability to express or understand language.

Assistant Professor Cathy Torrington Eaton, PhD, CCC-SLP, chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the School of Health Professions, studies ways to improve communication for people with aphasia and their caregivers. She also leads the San Antonio Network for Aphasia and the Summer Aphasia Program.

The School of Health Professions (then called the School of Allied Health Sciences) welcomed its first students in fall 1976. Five decades later, we've changed names, added many programs and degrees and have graduated more than 12,000 students.

With that legacy in mind, we wish students, faculty and staff another great year pursuing excellence in health professions!

We're excited to have students joining our Respiratory Care, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Speech-Language Pathology, Imaging Sciences and Medical Sciences programs.

Thanks to the San Antonio Spurs for once again inviting the UT San Antonio School of Health Professions to participate in the annual Spurs Back to School Bash on Saturday for families and teachers in our community!

We also thank the students and faculty from our Respiratory Care, Physician Assistant Studies and Physical Therapy programs who provided a mix of engaging experiences and important health checks and information, including:

✅ A pig lung demonstration to show respiratory function
✅ Ultrasound demonstration enabling participants to watch their muscles and joints move in real time
✅ Blood pressure, BMI and blood glucose checks
✅ Respiratory medication information and ventilators
✅ The opportunity to try on an airway clearance vest
