UT San Antonio and its academic health center, UT Health San Antonio, recently received more than $2.7 million in new academic and prevention awards from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, or CPRIT, to further its mission of fighting cancer across South Texas.

This includes a $2 million award to cancer research by faculty at the Long School of Medicine and principal investigator Michael T. Berton, PhD, professor and deputy chair in the Department of Immunology and Molecular Genetics.

“We are committed to providing cancer investigators with the most advanced technologies to facilitate their goals in new discoveries to advance cancer prevention and treatment options and, ultimately, in improving patient care,” Berton said.

Honoring those who, in death, continued to teach the living. UT San Antonio recently held its annual Burial of Ashes ceremony, bringing together donor families, students, faculty and staff to honor those who gave their bodies for health professional education and research.

For many students, these donors become their “first patients," teaching lessons in anatomy, compassion, humility and service that will shape the care they provide throughout their careers.

“This ceremony is dedicated to those who, in death, have served the living through their generosity and kindness,” said Omid B. Rahimi, PhD.

Thank you to the donors and families whose extraordinary gifts continue to impact generations of future health care professionals: https://bit.ly/4nNgvPw
