TXAEYC Award! Melissa Ann Sandoval is an Early Childhood Studies student at SAC and an Instructional Assistant for Head Start at Neal Elementary. She was honored by the San Antonio Chapter of the Texas Association for the Education of Young Children with the” Emerging Leader of Champions award”. She started in the education field as a substitute teacher. Later she became a Parent Liaison and enjoyed working with parents. Her passion for working in a classroom with children lead to becoming an Instructional Assistant. She earned her CDA and this year received the T.E.A.C.H. scholarship to continue her education.

TXAEYC Awards! Professor Ana DeHoyos O’Connor, faculty member in the Early Childhood Studies Program, was honored on March 24th by the San Antonio Chapter of the Texas Association for the Education of Young Children. She received the “Champion of Advocacy” award for her continuous work in advocating for quality early childhood programs. This work includes recruiting students to the field of early childhood and partnering with other agencies to develop pathways for the continued education of teachers. She works tirelessly in promotion of the early childhood profession and securing livable wages for early childhood teachers. The community has benefited tremendously from Ana’s dedication.

Rally at the Capitol! Ten students from the Early Childhood Studies Program accompanied two faculty members, the Early Childhood Center director, and other community leaders to the state capitol for Early Childhood Day. The Early Childhood Studies club president, Michelle Ramelli, prepared a packet of bills pertaining to ECE and other important information to distribute to everyone on the bus. Upon arrival, students joined groups from around the state for a rally on the capitol steps. Throughout the day, small groups met with representatives to inform them of the importance of early childhood education.

San Antonio College announces the selection of Dr. Naydeen González-De Jesús as its 13th president, making her the first woman president in a quarter century and only the second to hold the office since the college’s founding in 1925.

González-De Jesús, who currently serves as executive vice president of Student Success at Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC), was approved unanimously by the Alamo Colleges District Board of Trustees on Tuesday, December 13. She will officially begin her new role on January 9, succeeding SAC Interim President Dr. Francisco Solis, who has served in that capacity since June.
