Defects as Foe or Friend: The Development of Silicon Carbide from Nuclear Batteries to Quantum Sensors
🎓 IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society Distinguished Lecture

Explore how silicon carbide (SiC) is advancing from high-power electronics to high-temperature radiation detectors, nuclear batteries, and emerging quantum sensors. Prof. Cao will share recent breakthroughs in alpha-particle spectroscopy (up to 500 °C), SiC-based nuclear batteries, and reactor dose monitoring.

Big congrats to Luis and Paul on earning the Guo & Bhalla Endowed Materials Research Graduate Fellowship for Fall 2025! 🎉 The department just celebrated them at the award ceremony—well deserved!

ECE took 3 of the 4 top prizes for Senior Design 2 at the Tech Symposium!

• Overall 1st place ($4k) for "SDQ Engineering" with the HEB Low Volume Chicken Seasoning project. This was a combined effort by ECE and ME. The ME team was recognized with a department runner up award.
• Overall 3rd place ($2k) for "Power Facthor" with Remote Site Camera Monitoring project.
• An AESS Special Recognition Award certificate on the use of AI for "RetroPark" with the Parking Occupancy Monitoring project. This was presented by Garret Hall.

Senior Design 2 had a department runner up award (no cash prize) with the "FORCE" and their Lunar Payload Deployment project (WEX Foundation).

Senior Design 1 had a department best ($1k) for MODI-FLY modular drone project (Dr. Cao's sponsored project).

Good job Senior Design Teams and Dr. Benavidez!
