Welcome Dr. Katrin Gaardbo Kuhn, the new chair for the Department of Biology, Health, and Environment here at UT San Antonio.

Kuhn is currently serving as the department vice chair and a Presidential Professor and associate professor of infectious disease epidemiology in the Department of Biostatistics & Epidemiology at the University of Oklahoma Health Campus. She will join the College of Sciences on September 1, 2026.

Meet Marissa Martinez, a spring 2026 graduate who earned her M.S. degree in Mathematics with a concentration in math education and crossed the stage at the Alamodome last weekend. Her time at UT San Antonio has helped her grow as a student, educator and researcher.

“Seeing the recognition and understanding cross a student’s mind and seeing their pride in their own work has always been one of my favorite parts of teaching.”

Meet Ana Vallejo, a dual major in neuroscience and psychology, who has earned the opportunity to research and travel through The Top Scholar program and several other organizations.

“This has genuinely become my community...What I’m most proud of is the community I’ve built and the way people here have shown up for me.” Vallejo said.

Congratulations to Ana Vallejo and the rest of the graduating Class of 2026. They will cross the stage this weekend at the Spring 2026 Commencement Ceremony, held downtown at the Alamodome.

We congratulate Lindsey Macpherson, PhD, for being selected as the inaugural Oskar Fischer Endowed Professor, one of the highest honors bestowed on a faculty member, recognizing excellence in scholarship and research.

Funds generated through the endowment will support innovative research related to Alzheimer’s disease and other related conditions.

Macpherson joined the UT San Antonio faculty in 2017. Since then, she has conducted research in areas such as circuit mapping and sensory neuroscience. Macpherson also serves as the director for the Macpherson Lab at UT San Antonio.

We thank Dr. Macpherson for her commitment to students and research at UT San Antonio College of Sciences.

Lindsey Macpherson joined the UTSA faculty in 2017. Her research interests include circuit mapping, sensory neuroscience, and functional imaging techniques.

What if your research as an undergraduate informed a presentation at a scientific conference? For Lizette Rodrgiuez, a first-gen college student and San Antonio native, this dream became a reality.

Lizette helped develop new methods for mapping clusters which informed a presentation hosted by the Southwest Research Institute .

“The mix of unique research opportunities and approachable faculty makes a big difference. It creates space for students like me to really pursue our interests.” Rodriguez said.

We recently celebrated UTSA Chemistry professors Kirk Schanze, John Frederick, and Waldek Gorski as they gave their last lectures at UT San Antonio this spring semester.

The “Last Lecture” is a special tradition and serves as an opportunity to reflect on a career of teaching, research, and impact.

Meet Dr. Robert Renthal, professor of Neuroscience, Developmental and Regenerative Biology who was recently recognized for 50 years of service at the UT San Antonio University Excellence Awards.

Dr. Renthal began as a biophysical chemist who joined the Division of Earth and Physical Sciences in 1975, which at the time only had five other chemists, two geologists, and a physicist.

We congratulate Dr. Renthal for his five decades of service at the UT San Antonio College of Sciences.
