Dear Family, Friends, & Community,

We share with heavy hearts the loss of Frida Pineda Alvear, founding board member of the Pilipina/o/x Alumni Council at UC San Diego, on April 10, 2024, after an almost 2 year fiercely fought battle with breast cancer.

In her words, "In Summer 2022, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Hormone-positive Breast Cancer and went through the most aggressive treatment. January 2024, I found out incidentally that my cancer decided to mutate (as cancer does) and flip to Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC), an aggressive form of breast cancer." (March 2024) Ultimately, the cancer spread to additional parts of Frida's body. She fought each stage with the utmost strength and bravery all while continuing to choose and experience joy and love with her loved ones.

Frida was a lifelong San Diego native who worked on strengthening the various communities she was a part of, including her own children's school community, her fellow breasties (those with similar diagnoses as herself), at UCSD and Morse High School, in her childhood neighborhood of Paradise Hills, and was involved in numerous interest groups, including baby wearing and plant groups.

To know Frida was to love Frida. Her passing has made an immeasurable impact on her family, friends, and community. She was a beloved partner to her husband Carlo, mama to 3 beautiful young children Kayla, 10, Ethan, 8, and Derek, 5. Frida openly shared her cancer journey to help inspire, advocate, support, comfort, and educate. Even on her hardest days, Frida was the epitome of selflessness as she never stopped caring and fighting for others.

Here are some ways to remember her:

Hello everyone,

I hope you and your families are well and safe in these unprecedented times. Later today, the UCSD API community has put together a virtual Vigil and Memorial to address the violence against Asian women in Atlanta. We understand if you cannot make it, especially on such short notice. We are also trying to put together other opportunities for us to come together virtually in the coming months with just the Pilipinx Alumni Council and in solidarity with other alumni organizations. I know many of us are experiencing differing levels of grief, anger, fear and sadness over the recent uptick and historical violence against our communities. If you are a licensed counselor or a mental health practioner and would like to help our community come together in the future to grieve, vent, and/or drive actionable changes, please reach out with your available capacity. If you are in need of counseling or just someone to talk to, but do not know where to start, please feel free to reach out to me and I will try to connect you with someone.

If you would like to join the event later today, please register at tinyurl.com/ucsdmematlanta

Below is a letter from the Chancellor Kholsa addressing the shootings in Atlanta.

Stay safe folks.

Statement in Support of Asian Communities Impacted by Shootings in Atlanta

UC San Diego is deeply saddened by the news that eight people, including six Asian women, were shot dead at three metropolitan Atlanta establishments on Tuesday night. We mourn the senseless and tragic loss of these lives. While the man being charged with the murders denies his actions were racially motivated, the killings come at a time when attacks on Asian, Asian American and Pacific Islander communities have increased dramatically.

When faced with tragedies such as these, we often feel afraid for our personal safety and the safety of our friends and families. UC San Diego stands together with our Asian, Asian American, Southeast Asian and Pacific Islander family, friends and neighbors, and we denounce any and all acts of violence, hatred, or bigotry towards these community members. We encourage everyone to reach out to fellow Tritons to support one another and to be “in community” as we navigate this vulnerable time. Through compassionate actions, we create a campus community of care and belonging.

We understand that events of this nature can affect everyone in different ways. If you feel impacted by this and other events, or if you are experiencing feelings of grief, UC San Diego has resources to support you.

Student Affairs Case Management Services is available to assist Asian Pacific Islander Middle Eastern Desi American students or any student impacted by the violence against the Asian community.

We condemn all acts of anti-Asian racism and violence in the strongest terms, and we continue to stand in solidarity with our Asian, Asian American, Southeast Asian, and Pacific Islander communities at UC San Diego, in our local community, in the U.S. and around the world.

Hello friends,

Happy New Year. I hope you and your families are doing well and staying safe. I wanted to reach out to you to update you on a few things and ask for your assistance.

1) Career Path Panels - With the success of the Filipino Instant Pot Cookbook event, we were hoping to leverage our virtual space and provide spaces for people to discuss career paths/authors/entry into different industries/entrepreneurship....etc. If this is something you would be interested in, please let me know.

2) KP is hosting a College 2 Career Mxntorship program. They're looking for speakers/mxntors: Those interested in being a mxntor also have the opportunity to sign up to speak at a panel January 19th, 2021 from 5-7 pm. Here's the link to the application: https://tinyurl.com/C2CMxntor2020. I've also attached a marketing graphic.

3) We are looking for someone who would be interested in being our Communications & Media Coordinator. We need someone who is would be willing to communicate any news updates via email, social media (FB, IG, LinkedIn, etc). If you are or know anyone who would be interested, please let me know.

4) Lastly, we have been in discussions with the Alumni Office and the Director of Development, Campus Initiatives|Diversity to formalize a scholarship. To give you an idea of the goals we are trying to reach, here's a brief description of what the Black Alumni Council is able to do. When they established their endowment over 20 years ago, they started off small and would continue to feed their endowment year-round through several fundraisers. Last year, the size of their endowment was $750,000 and they were able to provide 10-$5,000 scholarship to Black students from the interest alone. Though the process to begin an endowment has a few different paths, we need an idea of how much we would be able to raise within 6-12 months. If you are interested in donating to the scholarship or providing input for the criteria for choosing a scholar, please let me know. Ideally, the awardee would either be an incoming student or a 4th year student who has contributed to the advancement and enhancement of building up the Pilipinx Community.

Best regards,
