In Conversation with Benjamin Bernard (YC11)

You’re invited to an In Conversation event on Thursday, May 14 featuring Benjamin Bernard (YC11), a postdoctoral associate in Yale University’s Department of History. Bernard’s work sits at the intersection of intellectual and institutional history, with a focus on how institutions of higher learning have claimed, defended, and periodically lost public trust—especially during moments of technological, political, and epistemic upheaval. At Yale, he is affiliated with President McInnis’s faculty Committee on Trust in Higher Education, whose recent report on public confidence in colleges and universities helps inform current efforts to rebuild trust. His work brings historical depth to contemporary questions many alumni continue to grapple with today.

In conversation, Bernard will explore crises of legitimacy from the medieval world to the present, examining how shifts in media, expertise, and public participation have repeatedly unsettled academic authority. Drawing on his research and teaching on early modern French history, with cases ranging from Parisian theologians and Enlightenment satirists to modern research universities such as Yale, he will explore a tension at the heart of universities: that they are indispensable producers of knowledge yet always vulnerable to skepticism. The discussion offers a historically grounded approach to understanding today’s debates about trust, legitimacy, and the future of the university.

This event will take place in North County (92127). Specifics will be emailed a week ahead. There are no physical tickets for the event.

Secretary & Past-President, Oxford & Cambridge Society of San Diego

Wednesday, June 24th, Measure for Measure at the Old Globe outdoor theater at 8.00pm with a pre-performance talk in the Craig Noel Garden at 7.15pm.

Justice and desire collide in Shakespeare’s timeless tale of power and hypocrisy. When Vienna’s Duke suddenly disappears, his morally rigid deputy Angelo takes control—determined to rid the city of vice. But when he condemns a young man to death and then propositions the man’s sister, his actions reveal the cracks in his facade of authority. Filled with rich characters, surprising twists, and a comic group of seedy grifters on the make, Measure for Measure explores who holds power, who gets punished, and what it truly means to be virtuous.

Heavily discounted tickets in Area A and Premium seats are available HERE. Scroll down to June 24th on the Calendar, click on MORE and select the number of seats you wish, then Choose My Seats. The 35% discount is included in the ticket price shown.
