In honor of Earth Day, the Sustainable Environments class presented their sustainable design projects. Each student conducted research on sustainable design principles and site analysis. This included bioclimatic studies to minimize energy consumption and optimize natural light utilization, life cycle analysis, and 3rd party certifications to select sustainable, low-emitting materials to enhance indoor air quality.

Next week DI will hold its recurring Open campus on April 23rd, from 11am-5pm.

Open campus is a time to come curious, motivated, and excited. Whether you know everything or absolutely nothing about design; Open Campuses allow you to start the process of your design journey. You will have the opportunity to:

-Have your transcripts evaluated
-Discuss financial aid options tour the campus
-Receive application waiver codes
-Speak directly with the people that make DI so great

This highlight shows a glimpse of MID candidates and their thesis presentations. The hard work they have dedicated was evident through their oral defenses and their boards and presentations showcased their ideas beautifully.

Pursuing a Master of Interior Design reflects a commitment to passion, perseverance, and innovation. These qualities are recognized and celebrated throughout the design community. We commend our Master’s candidates and can’t wait to celebrate them at this upcoming commencement.

MID Thesis Oral Presentations will take place on April 13th from 9:30am-12:15pm.

MID Candidate Denaria Tindal will present her Thesis: A Common Ground; Transitional Living Community from 9:30-10:15.

MID Candidate Evangelene Guerrero-Suniga will present her Thesis: Cultivating Community: Designing a Community Cultural Center in the Convoy District of San Diego from 10:30-11:15.

MID Candidate Sarah Agudo will present her Thesis: Tropical Oasis: A Creative Hub for Collaborative Design from 11:30-12:15.

All presentations will be taking place in Building 4, room 402 and the invitation is extended to those who wish to come learn, observe, and support.

Here are some clips from last month’s field trip to Cabinets Galore; providing supplementation to an ongoing class project. Students visited multiple locations to gain inspiration for different aspects of their charrette project.

Happy first Friday of April!
Design Institute is unique amongst design-focused colleges. Being located in Sunny San Diego, in the heart of the "Miramar Design District," and just a few miles from La Jolla beaches, provides students with amazing opportunities - and amazing views.

We look forward to meeting all prospective students as they visit their ideal colleges during the spring and summer college tour season. While here, make sure to enjoy the sun, flowers, and ocean; all part of nature's own design.

As we commence our Spring Break, we wanted to share a recap of DI's recent Interior Design Preview Event. DI instructor, Mairim Saavedra, led participants through a mood board activity; providing each person a different client request scenario. Each team gathered materials from the materials lab to create a vision template.

Visit the DI campus on Thursday, March 26th, to see how you fit into the world of design.

Open campus is open to everyone, and will present the opportunity to tour the campus, meet with financial aid, and have any and all of your questions answered. Gain a sneak peek into the life of a design student through displays of student work, conversations with staff, and a look into the classrooms and studios.

The Commercial Interior Design I Studio Course took a field trip to Hyphn earlier this month. Hyphn is a corporate office interior design dealership located in the old Union Tribune building in Mission Valley. Students learned about the latest considerations in design needs as technology continues to play a large role in today’s offices. As an example, with companies operating on hybrid schedules, this allows for smaller spaces - changing the space planning approach. Students got to hear about various tech-focused aspects of workplace design; such as different tools needed for web meetings, strategically-positioned microphones, interactive monitors, and tracking cameras.
