UC San Diego Research Administration Training Program The Research Administration Training Program is dedicated to supporting the training, education and development of UC San Diego Research Administrators

UC San Diego was recently named the 14th best university in the world for the fourth year in a row by the 2016 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) and with $1 billion a year in funding, it often finds itself on the leader board for top research institutions. UC San Diego is also home to some of the best and brightest scientist in the world. The research they conduct is as diverse and imp

actful as they are. The impressive administrative workforce who faithfully support this incredible effort are known as Research Administrators (RAs). RAs find themselves having to be masters of all. They need to be well versed in accounting and financial management, compliance, human resources, while maintaining an extensive amount of subject matter expertise regarding sponsors/agencies, various funding instruments like grants and contracts as well as the policies, procedures and regulations, that go along with them. They also have to utilize a plethora of systems and tools in order to perform the transactional functions required of the job and information about the potential auditing that can follow. RAs help with training and development of others and in addition to general knowledge, skills and abilities, understand the complex organizational structure we function within. While most importantly having excellent skills in communications to maintain diplomacy in order to act as liaisons and uphold the best interests of the Principal Investigators and institution they serve, all while working in a deadline driven environment. As part of the Research Administration Training Program, our team aims to support UC San Diego Research Administrators and be the backbone of such hardworking individuals.

Save the marine life from plastic debris entering the ocean. Not only does making sure you never litter help but picking up litter or stopping others from littering will go a long way to reduce plastic pollution.

A newly-published study in Scientific Reports shows that plastic debris less than 5 millimeters across, known as microplastic, is common from the surface to the seafloor. It may also be entering marine food webs, both at the surface and in the deep.

The RA Training Program is excited to incorporate the new ways that UC San Diego is streamlining business processes campus-wide to our array of offerings. Because of these changes in the business processes and tools that you use, it is important that we take time to redesign the content that you’ll need to successfully perform your role as a research administrator.

The implementation of the ESR Projects has brought new time commitments for our instructors. Putting a hold on the Spring 2019 Offering of the RA Training Program will allow our instructors and team to evaluate the changes as a result of the ESR projects. The necessary content updates will be incorporated in our Fall 2019 offering.

During the interim, we are developing supplemental online materials that provide a basic understanding of the research administrator role, which we hope will provide meaningful content. The Sponsored Projects Life Cycle, the first video in this series, is available now: https://youtu.be/OIiExrHWfRA

Be on the lookout for new materials by signing up for the listserv, looking on our Blink page and following us on Facebook. You can also watch our library of Two Minute Topic videos on our YouTube channel.

This is a short introduction to a new offering by the UC San Diego Research Administration Training Program. The team will provide regularly published virtua...
