The HTH Graduate School of Education (GSE) —the nation's first graduate school situated entirely within a K-12 learning community—supports teachers, educational leaders and school founders in reimagining schools with a focus on equity, deeper learning and shared leadership. The GSE is embedded within the 16 High Tech High K-12 schools, providing a rich context for personalized, hands-on learning

and the integration of theory and practice. The GSE’s commitment to diversity, equity and integration is central to the mission, as are its aspirations to serve as a hub for antiracist/anti-bias and deeper learning practices within higher education. The GSE functions as a full adult learning community with graduate degree programs, fellowship programs, the Center for Research on Equity and Innovation, and a range of professional learning offerings. The GSE offers two master’s programs: an M.Ed. in Teaching & Learning (T&L) through the Teaching Apprenticeship Program (TAP), which also serves as a pathway for candidates to earn a Multiple Subject or Single Subject California Preliminary Teaching Credential. The GSE also offers the New School Creation Fellowship for educational leaders committed to designing and founding new schools focused on equity, deeper learning and innovation.

✨ NEW in Unboxed: your future self is begging you to save that student work before summer starts.

At the end of every school year, educators face the same tension: the exhaustion of the present versus the wisdom of the future. And while “future you” may feel far away right now, this issue is a reminder that the work you curate today can shape the learning culture of next year’s classroom.

Inside this week’s issue:
🖼️ How to create a meaningful “Tribute Wall” with student work
💡 A powerful story about what happened when one student’s work was left out of a school exhibition
📸 A photo essay showcasing curation across High Tech High classrooms and hallways

Because when students see that their work matters, they start believing that they matter too.

🚨 NEW: Unboxed Issue 30 (Spring 2026) is out now!

What happens when deeper learning and continuous improvement stop operating in separate lanes—and start informing one another?

The newest issue of *Unboxed* explores exactly that. From live conversations at the Deeper Learning Conference + National Summit for Improvement in Education to stories of belonging, literacy, attendance, and international collaboration, this issue is full of educators wrestling with how meaningful change actually happens in schools.

Inside Issue 30:
🎤 A live crossover conversation with Ben Daley, Jim May, and Ash Vasudeva
🧠 Reflections on what deeper learning + continuous improvement owe each other
🦋 A relationship-centered approach to chronic absenteeism
🌎 Stories of collaborative learning and improvement from Brazil, Portugal, and Argentina
🤝 Powerful insights on belonging for multilingual learners and immigrant students

As Alec Patton writes, “continuous improvement is an enabling structure for deeper learning.” This issue explores what that can look like in practice.

What a powerful few days at the RAISE Spring Learning Session. 💛

District teams from across CA gathered in San Diego last week to learn together, challenge one another, and strengthen their efforts to improve attendance and student engagement.

Across three days, we celebrated our accomplishments as a network, teams dug into data, shared implementation successes and struggles, participated in improvement reviews, explored RAISE’s foundational practices, and planned for the work ahead. From student voice spotlights to “hot topic” conversations and cross-district collaboration, the convening reflected what makes this network so special:
➡️ honest learning
➡️ practical problem-solving
➡️ and deep commitment to students and families

We were especially excited to welcome Cohort 2 into the network and continue building a community grounded in the belief that all teach, all learn.

Grateful for every district leader, educator, and partner who showed up fully and contributed to the learning. The work continues—and we’re leaving energized for what comes next. 🚀

🔥 It’s been 50 days since DL26 ended… and honestly? The energy still hasn’t worn off.

The ideas.
The joy.
The hallway conversations.
The student voices.
The deep dives that completely shifted how we think about teaching and learning.

DL26 reminded us what happens when thousands of educators come together to imagine something more human, creative, and courageous for young people.

This highlight reel captures just a fraction of the energy, brilliance, and magic that filled every corner of the conference. 💫

Already feeling nostalgic? Same.
The good news: DL27 registration is officially open.

What does it take to bring exhibitions of learning to a large public high school—and make them stick?

In this episode of Unboxed, Alec Patton talks with Lincoln High School Principal Melissa Agudelo about the messy, ambitious, and deeply worthwhile process of building a culture of exhibition from the ground up.

From navigating logistics to embracing imperfection, Melissa shares how their team moved forward by focusing less on “perfect implementation” and more on creating meaningful opportunities for students to publicly share their learning.

Because powerful exhibitions aren’t just events—they’re a reflection of what a school believes students are capable of.
