For over two decades, Raúl Díaz has operated at the dynamic intersection of architectural practice and academic mentorship. As an Architect and Principal at RNT Architects, his visionary designs have reshaped skylines and community spaces across Southern California and New York City.

Throughout his career, Díaz has led and contributed to a diverse portfolio of notable, award-winning projects that deeply impact how communities learn, gather, and connect with their history. His completed projects include the historic reconstruction of the Balboa Park Botanical Building, the Borrego Springs Library, Sage Creek High School, and the new Humanities Building and Student Services Building at Fullerton College.

For over 25 years, Díaz has been a Contributing Faculty member at the Newschool of Architecture and Design. Currently teaching second-year students in the Graduate Program, he guides emerging architects through complex Design Studios, bridging the gap between theoretical academia and practical ex*****on.

Project: Inparallel Sacrament Church

This initiative seeks to convert the Blessed Sacrament Church into the new campus for NewSchool of Architecture and Design. Situated just over a mile from San Diego State University (SDSU), this location will foster a collaborative partnership between the two institutions. The design will honor the church’s distinctive features, such as its windows and vaulted ceilings, while incorporating modern and layered elements. Studios, classrooms, and meeting areas will be revitalized with an emphasis on natural light and collaboration. Raised within an Indigenous community, Neshaaw Osuna-Sutton is an undergraduate student pursuing his Bachelor of Architecture at NewSchool of Architecture & Design.

Community was the driving force in how he was raised. The buildings and environments a designer creates have an impact on the people who inhabit them. For Neshaaw, serving the people he designs for is not simply a choice that comes with becoming an architect. It is something that has been ingrained in his identity from day one.

Today, he serves as Vice President of Student Council, where he strives to be a true voice for his fellow students while also carrying a strong voice for his own Indigenous identity.

As Neshaaw continues his journey in architecture, community remains at the heart of what he hopes to accomplish.
