Alumni Spotlight: Shannon Sampson Dawkins!

Shannon graduated in 2008 after completing her practicum training at UCSD Family Medicine. After graduation, she remained at UCSD Family Medicine as an intern through 2010. During this time, she regularly presented to medical students and residents on relevant behavioral health topics. She also conducted psycho-educational groups on topics such as mindfulness and stress management. In 2010, she moved to North Carolina with her husband, who had been accepted for fellowship training at Wake Forest University. She took the National Exam prior to the move, and became licensed in North Carolina. She obtained a clinical position with Family Services, a community mental health agency. The population served included clients with general mental health needs, as well as child physical and sexual abuse cases. This included significant collaboration with the local child welfare department. She concurrently conducted weekly support groups through Heartstrings, a local resource for parents grieving pregnancy and infant loss.
She returned to San Diego the following year, splitting her time as a licensed clinician between UCSD’s Departments of Family Medicine and Pediatrics. In 2012, she first opened her Private Practice. She taught the Child Abuse Intercession course at SOLES in the spring. In 2014, she obtained a full-time position with the Department of Defense as a Clinician in the Family Advocacy Program at MCAS Miramar. She worked predominantly with involuntary Active Duty Marines and their families with recent incidents of DV and child abuse. She resigned from this position upon the birth of her first child in 2015, and since then has maintained her part-time private practice in Sorrento Valley. She had her second child in 2016, and continues to maintain her practice part-time, specializing in anxiety disorders, grief & loss, maternal and adolescent mental health. More information can be found at www.shannonsampsonmft.com
In her personal time, Shannon and her husband John enjoy spending time with their two children, Dominic (age 2) and Harper (9 months). They are expecting their third child in late winter, so will soon be juggling three under three. In the little free time they have, they enjoy beach days with their kids, picnics in the park, walks with their chocolate lab Lucy, and the occasional movie or new Netflix series. Shannon’s days currently revolve around play dates, music classes, adventure and family fun around San Diego, and, right now, she wouldn’t want it any other way. She looks back fondly on her education and experience at USD, as well as the friendships formed and maintained a decade later. She feels grateful for the strong clinical foundation, training, supervision, and mentorship she received along the way and in the years since.

Kristina has been married to her husband, Tucker, since 1995 and he is also a USD graduate with his M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction. Tucker is a special education teacher on the south side of Chicago. Both of their children - Taylor (19) and Kyle (18) – were born while Kristina was in the MFT program at USD and they were both baptized in Founders Chapel and are now in college at Saint Mary’s College of California. Taylor is currently studying abroad through a program called Seamester where she is sailing with 11 other students and four instructors on an 88 foot sailboat for 80 days through the British Virgin Islands and Grenada. Kyle is enjoying his freshman year leaving Kristina and Tucker as first-time empty nesters. Though they miss their kids, they are exploring all the wonderful things that living in the Chicago Loop has to offer! Kristina loves to read and tries to find time to scrapbook and quilt. She especially likes to take photographs both around the city and on the family’s many travels over the years. She has also enjoyed connecting with other graduates of the USD MFT program who live and work in Chicago.

Kristina is forever grateful for the opportunities that attending the USD MFT program has provided her including her love for the field and a desire to make a difference in training and supervising students who strive to be future clinicians, supervisors, researchers, and academics. She is especially grateful for the introduction to Medical Family Therapy through her coursework and the mentorship of USD faculty and specializes in the impact of women’s health issues, specifically endometriosis, on couples and families through her clinical work and research.

Alumni Spotlight: Jennifer Lundy-Aguerre!

Jennifer Lundy-Aguerre graduate in 2002. Since then, she has worked as a Wraparound Family Service Coordinator at Mental Health Systems; a Psycho Social Rehabilitation Counselor at Community Research Foundation; a Care Manager at Optum Health; a Research Therapist at Veterans Medical Research Foundation; and in private practice.
Jennifer is the Owner and Director of Positive Change Counseling Center, established in 2006. PCCC is now a group practice with individually contracted Licensed Clinicians (MFT’s, LCSW’s & Psychologists) treating clients in a beautiful, intimate and professional office in La Mesa. The center is open 7 days a week and offers a variety of treatment types for clients ages 5 and up. It has been quite an adventure to watch this grow from a sole proprietorship practice, to managing a business and being able to serve so many clients in the East San Diego County communities. Graduate school definitely doesn’t prepare us for running a business, but the educational foundation and clinical skills from the MFT program at USD are second to none! Jennifer has been fortunate to meet and hire several other USD Alumni to join her practice over the years as well.
In her free time, Jennifer and her husband, Chris, enjoy spending time outdoors with their daughters, Ruby (4) and Coral (2), and are trying to get as much family time in together as possible before Ruby starts kindergarten next year. Parenthood has been life-changing in so many ways…and MOST of them have been fun ;-) Becoming a mother also led to Jennifer’s interest in the Gottman Bringing Baby Home curriculum and she became a Certified Trainer in BBH in 2013. Her hope is to teach these classes on a regular basis to new and expecting parents in the upcoming years.
Jennifer is so grateful for having had the opportunity to attend the MFT program at USD. She believes it has been such an outstanding foundation for this rewarding, exciting and enjoyable career.
