SDSU Mechatronics Club

The San Diego State Mechatronics Club is a student-run organization focused on promoting STEM education by providing opportunities for students to take part in team-based, engineering-oriented projects. A division of SDSU Mechatronics, our RoboSub team participates in AUVSI Foundation's International RoboSub Competition, which takes place in Point Loma. Autonomous underwater vehicles navigate an u

nderwater obstacle course involving image-processing, maneuvering, path following, torpedo targeting, marker dropping, object manipulation, and pinger locating. The Mechatronics Club is currently expanding its horizons to the RoboX competition, a broader, yet similar, competition involving autonomous submarines, boats, and planes.

Featuring a compact hull design with a simplified electrical system, Pico was designed as a small-scale, low-cost AUV that can be assembled and tested by a single team member amidst a remote working environment.

When the pandemic first hit the United States in March, Mechatronics activities halted just as team members were beginning to assemble the 2020 RoboSub vehicle, Scion. SDSU's COVID-19 guidelines, in adherence to San Diego County guidelines, restricted club activities to continue remotely only. It was then that the Mechatronics team leadership started formulating plans for engaging members while working from home. In the Fall 2020 semester, incoming team members were trained with a series of training modules created for the mechanical, software, and electrical engineering disciplines applied for RoboSub. They were also tasked with designing a "minisub" - a small AUV that could be tested in a bathtub. The project proved to be a challenge, and taking the research and lessons learned from the minisub teams, Pico's design was created.

The Mechatronics team is now gearing up to continue testing Pico and deliver footage for the RoboSub competition demonstration video.

We placed 4th overall in the 23rd International RoboSub competition out of 33 teams! Despite the in-person component being canceled, our team was able to compete with our design report, team video, and website submissions. We're proud of our team's hard work that led to these awards!

The 23rd RoboSub Competition looked a lot different this year: in lieu of vehicle performance, teams were evaluated on a technical design report, video presentation and website. With 33 teams and the challenge of closed labs and social distancing, it was quite the competition! Find out the results below!
