Broadway-quality 'The Spitfire Grill a Musical' dazzles
Film to the stage production runs in Sunland through March 25

Review by Carin Chea
THE TOLUCAN TIMES

“It’s hard to count the days when you’re buried alive. I had nowhere to hide the last time I was free.” So begins The Spitfire Grill a Musical.

At the onset, it is undeniable: This will be a heartbreaking and healing hero’s journey. We were not disappointed.

Director Tim Borquez, and vocal director Mazie Rudolph, spare no expense in bringing this musical adaptation of the film to the stage. The cast is stellar, and Broadway-quality, with voices so rich I felt like I had just won the California mega-millions jackpot. The production value is high, far exceeding many of the theatre shows I have seen in and around Los Angeles.

Lead actor, Tiffany Oliver, shines as protagonist Percy Talbott. Oliver’s quiet and still (yet palpable) presence is the perfect combination to tell the story of a young woman with buried secrets soon to be unearthed. Oliver is supported by an amazing ensemble who understand the art of nuanced storytelling.

Of special mention is Fiama Fricano Traxler, who hypnotizes the audience with her charisma. Traxler’s performance is paradoxical – incredibly commanding, yet discreet; robust, yet elusive; passionately ardent, yet calm as still waters. Traxler’s moments of quiet are equally as powerful as her moments of intoxicating songstress. She is an exclamation, ellipses, question mark and period all at the same time.

It is fitting that The Spitfire Grill a Musical is playing in a church. The experience is absolutely divine.
