Congratulations to CCA's Curatorial Practice Class of 2020!

‘The Word for World is Forest’, a curatorial project featuring work by Sofía Córdova, Beatriz Cortez, Candice Lin, Allison Smith, and Patrick Staff, is now live at wattis.org.

invites the audience to imagine a future for San Francisco, that allows for various ways of coexistence, that values joy and care for the neighbor and for the other. It turns to artistic practices that demand their own agency through world-building and alternative ways of being. The work investigates how speculative thinking can challenge dominant narratives. By looking to ways of being that value living with allied species in a conscious symbiosis, the project imagines an alternative world of mutual respect, care, and survival.

Online at wattis.org from May 14–September 14, 2020, along with an exhibition catalog, downloadable as a free pdf or available to order in hard copy. Additional information about a possible physical exhibition to come later this year will be posted on the same site as it becomes available.

Last week, our graduate students in Curatorial Practice sat down with Anthony Huberman, Director and Chief Curator, and Calen Barca-Hall, Head of Installation and Exhibition Design, at the Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts to discuss the conceptual and practical makings of the Cinthia Marcelle’s exhibition "A morta." These intimate gatherings with curators and administrators at institutions in the Bay Area are part of an ongoing series called “The Is an Exhibition.” The series is organized throughout the academic year to provide our students access to the ideas and logistics of making of exhibitions, exposing them to the complexities of the field of curating.
