SF State Psychology Department

SF State Psychology Department Your source for news and information about the Psychology Department at SF State. Our department is home to over 700 undergraduate students.

We provide our students with a curriculum balanced between theory and application. The psychology department promotes an understanding of individual behavior and thought in its students. We teach insights into the basic processes of human perception, learning, cognition and motivation; the relationship of behavior to physiology; and the nature of psychological disorder. In 1960-61, based on its di

verse offerings and services, Psychology was assigned "division" status, with a Director as head of the Division. Further restructuring occurred in 1964-1965, when "divisions" were designated as "schools." This led to the designation of Psychology as the Department of Psychology and its assignment to the School of Behavioral and Social Sciences. Today, the Psychology department is part of the College of Science and Engineering. Since 2009, Psychology has been an impacted major. Students must apply to the department before being declared as a psychology major. With over 700 students in the major, admissions to the major is highly competitive. The application window for students is October 1st thru November 30th each year, with admission decisions made by late April for subsequent Fall semester. Additionally, the Psychology Department presently also offers two master's degree programs, each with three unique concentrations. The Master of Arts in Psychology program has concentrations in Developmental; Mind, Brain, Behavior; and Social Psychology. The Master of Science in Psychology program has concentrations in Clinical, School, and Industrial/Organizational Psychology. Many Psychology graduates choose to continue their study in the field by pursuing a Master’s and/or a PhD. However, because the Psychology curriculum is balanced between theory and application, graduates are not limited to the Psychology discipline and can use the skills and knowledge gained with the major to be successful in a wide range of fields including counseling, child development, business and law.
