University of San Francisco International Studies Alumni

University of San Francisco International Studies Alumni Welcome, USF International Studies alumni! The purpose of this page is to connect with former students in the USF International Studies program.

We look forward to hearing about your recent adventures and achievements. The Bachelor of Arts in International Studies (BAIS) is an innovative and academically rigorous interdisciplinary program that engages students in critical examination and ethical analysis of major international issues, institutions, and relations. Composed of a basic core of courses on the processes of globalization and glo

bal change, human rights, social justice, and global economic issues, the International Studies curriculum combines courses from the humanities, social sciences, arts, and science in discipline-based 'functional' and geographical tracks of study. The goal of the program is to prepare dedicated professionals who can integrate and apply knowledge across disciplines in the interest of solving global problems and making the world a more humane and just place for all. BAIS is based on the assumption that just as it is beyond the ability of one nation, or even a few nations, to solve trade, political, and environmental problems that have become transnational in character, it is also beyond the power of simply one or two academic disciplines to provide students with the comprehensive knowledge and experience required to function and lead effectively and creatively in the highly complex and rapidly changing environment we inhabit. Students collaborate closely with their academic advisors to select the functional and area tracks to correspond to their own academic and career interests. Students are strongly encouraged to complement their major with a study abroad experience in countries where they can apply and expand their foreign language competency and enrich their study of international issues. Graduates with a degree in international studies will be in demand in such fields as government service, education, international business, international media and communications, law, nongovernmental organizations, international development organizations, and international consulting.

The department begins 2021 with a bittersweet announcement. Professor Lindsay Gifford has left the University of San Francisco to join the Pozen Family Center for Human Rights at the The University of Chicago as an Assistant Research Professor. ⁣

“I am grateful for my time at USF, where work with Middle Eastern refugees was highly valued and in line with the university mission. I will miss my students and colleagues at USF but am looking forward to new opportunities and continued work in my field.”⁣

We miss her so much already but are so excited about this next phase in her career! Join us in wishing her well!

Hello IS Alums! Check out this awesome fellowship in DC - deadline is coming up quickly, so apply today!

Calling all recent (and soon-to-be) college and graduate school alumni: If you're passionate about international peace and security issues, and looking to work on them in Washington, DC, the Herbert Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowship may be for you: The next application deadlines are January 7, 2019 (fall 2019 semester) and October 1, 2019 (spring 2020 semester).

Here's more info:

The Scoville Fellowship offers six to nine-month salaried positions in the nation's capital with more than two dozen think tanks and advocacy groups. Scoville Fellows are supervised by senior-level staff members at the host institutions and may work on a range of issues including nuclear and conventional arms control and nonproliferation, conflict prevention and resolution, diplomacy, and environmental and energy security. They contribute to their host organizations' goals through research, public education, advocacy, and by writing articles, blog posts, fact sheets, letters to the editor, op-eds, and/or reports. In addition, fellows often organize talks and conferences and attend coalition meetings, policy briefings, and congressional hearings. Benefits include salary, partial health insurance reimbursement, mentoring, moving costs to DC, meetings with policy experts, an additional stipend for professional development use, and an entrée into an increasingly connected and influential network of alumni working for domestic and international NGOs, the Federal Government, academia, and media. For complete details and FAQs, see http://scoville.org/
