We, faculty at COB, are reaching out to our alumni seeking for support on signing a petition. This petition letter is supported by California Faculty Association (CFA).

Background:
During the pandemic, 75+ Business faculty, staff and multiple student organizations will be forced to move out from Science building to windowless basement or shared cubical offices in open space with poor ventilation in the old Creative Arts Building, far away from Business building. This relocation will last for at least 15 years.

Impact:
Health and safety concerns (poor indoor air quality and virus transmission).
How can faculty serve our students who come in for help on their personal /confidential issues in a cubical office? This is like your doctor discuss your personal health information in the reception area.

This relocation is going to impact five departments and 3,200 students and its effect will last for more than 15 years.

What are you signing for?
The petition requests that the University allocate space in the New Science Building to College of Business faculty and staff, which will benefit both students and faculty. Please sign and share this petition with your classmates.

The Startup Environment in the Bay Area

The International Business Department of San Francisco State University would like to invite faculty, students, staff and other interested individuals to an open seminar on the “Startup Environment in the Bay Area”. Although entrepreneurship and startups are hot topics in the news, we rarely get the chance to hear directly what the working experience is like in these organizations. A panel of four alumni will talk about their experiences and insights. This open seminar will take place on Friday November 3, 2017 from 11.30 to 12.30pm in Library room 121. We will also have food at this event. Please reply as soon as you can since seating may be limited. RSVP: https://sfsu.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bHrTyVnJGqal9E9

Congratulations on Professor Gerardo Ungson on publishing a new book!

Professor Gerardo (Buddy) Ungson's most recent book, SCALING THE TAIL: Managing Profitable Growth in Emerging Markets, co-authored with Seung Ho Park and Andrew Cosgrove, was released by Palgrave MacMillan this month.

An excerpt from the prospectus: “This book discusses the pitfalls of traditional scaling methods and presents a framework for a different type of profitable growth for multinational companies in emerging markets: "scaling the tail." By extending more recent advances in value-distribution, in which peripheral sales (those in the "tail") outnumber traditional mass-sales (those in the center of any distribution), the authors provide fine-grained insights into how multinational firms in the consumer goods and retailing sectors in emerging markets focus on specialized market niches using high-end brands, flanking particular segments and product-categories, developing deeply nuanced localization strategies, and installing supportive management systems. These findings are based on in-depth field interviews, along with a survey of 253 managers in 10 countries, conducted under the auspices of a collaborative Ernst and Young team and the Economist Intelligence Unit.”

This book is a second in a three-part series on emerging and developing markets. The first book, Rough Diamonds: The Four Traits of Successful Breakout Forms in BRIC Countries (co-authored with Seung Ho Park and Nan Zhou) was published by Jossey Bass last 2013, and was the recipient of the 2013 Best Book on Globalization by the Strategy + Business journal. The third book, ASEAN CHAMPIONS: Emerging Stalwarts in Regional Integration (co-authored with Seung Ho Park and J. Paolo Francisco) will be published by the Cambridge University Press on February 2016.
