The San Francisco Examiner is launching the inaugural San Franciscan of the Year awards, honoring the leaders and stewards of our community. Hundreds of submissions were narrowed down to the top 40 nominees. We are excited to announce Randy DeMartini ‘79, Executive Director of the Salesian Boys & Girls Club, is one of the nominees. DeMartini is a pillar in the North Beach community. He creates a welcoming environment through the Salesian Boys and Girls Club and mentors hundreds of youth. His organization provides after-school activities and enrichment programs for kids throughout this historic neighborhood. He spends countless days fostering the community in North Beach.

The Examiner will select the top 10 San Franciscans whose leadership has left an indelible mark on our City and who inspire us all to be better San Franciscans. Cast your vote today! Voting ends Tuesday, October 15.

The SHC community is deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Officer Luciano Ortega ’12. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. Sending love and strength to everyone who is grieving, family, loved ones, classmates and his colleagues at the San Francisco Police Department.

With the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics nearly a week away, it’s a good time to catch up with a Sacred Heart Cathedral Alum looking to bring the gold back home. Nate Ngo ’06, USA Volleyball Men’s National Team Technical Coordinator, took time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions, including his time at SHC, his love for blending his two passions (math and volleyball) and his path to success on and off the court.

It’s day two of 1WeekIrish and today we highlight an alum who has given back to the SHC Community in more ways than one.

Erin Diner Kayser graduated from Sacred Heart Cathedral in 1993. After working in Maryland for two years, she felt a calling to return home to California. “I was eager to come home to something familiar and special,” Erin said. After eight years, she returned to her alma mater, SHC, in 2001 as a social studies teacher. “A lot has changed, but one thing that never changed was the feeling of a place for everybody. It was overwhelming to be colleagues with many of my teachers who impacted my life during my high school career.”

In 2006, Erin took on a new role, Assistant Dean of Students, while continuing to instruct social studies. Her experiences helped her become more aware of both sides of education and the intensity of student lives. “The students are trying to balance an intense schedule every day. This helped me design my class and expectations,” she said. After 11 years, Erin realized her true passion was being an instructor, so she decided to step down as Assistant Dean of Students in 2017 to teach full-time at SHC.

While being an educator at SHC, Erin also wanted to bring the Class of 1993 back together for their 30-year reunion. Just weeks before, she and her classmates reconnected, reminisced and created new memories at Underdogs Cantina. “I enjoyed seeing everyone again and especially enjoyed talking about how much things have changed and what stayed the same,” she said.
