The Evergreen Edit: Day 4

A real showstopper evergreen shrub for you on this beautiful Thanksgiving Day. Eriogonum giganteum (St Catherine’s Lace Buckwheat) is a California native bee magnet in summertime, and come fall brings a cool glaucous foliage to the landscape. We love it backlit as a hedge for a sheer gauzy quality. Underplant with low water use groundcovers or alongside your culinary garden or orchard to support all sorts of pollinators.

FWIW, “evergreen” classification for a plant is dependent on your location on our beautiful planet. For reference, Wild Earth Art designs gardens in Northern California, primarily in . As for USDA Plant Hardiness Zones, we’re designing and planting in and . For Sunset Climate Zone Region we’re in Zones 14 and 15.

This Santa Rosa project is full of delights. We lucked out with an artful client in search of defined garden rooms to make their tight residential backyard feel spacious. In a couple years this fenceline will disappear behind Ribes sanguinium, Carpenteria californica, and Calamagrostis.

We went for a palette full of alongside drought-tolerant pollinator plants. An interwoven pathway and dry creek move between mounded planting bouquets.

The side yard raised beds received irrigation and a new pathway for easy garden cart access. We hid the neighbor’s grey garage wall with a freestanding trellis and espalier Pomegranate. Nearby, the existing pergola will soon disappear beneath purple Passionflower vines.

We also sourced specialty plants like the ‘James Galway’ climbing and a Lilac to honor out client’s past gardens — they’ve had fragrant lilacs in nearly every home since childhood 💜

We started with the “real estate special” (put in just before the house hit the market) of odd plant choices, landscape fabric EVERYWHERE, and no identity. Now this garden reflects the life and loves of its inhabitants.

This is a special place, somewhere we referred to as the “Inner Garden” in the design phase because it is a private garden off the primary bedroom. But, the more we visit and refine this space, the more it feels like a mirror of inner peace. A place for privacy, sanctuary, verdant calm.

What does your inner garden look like? Maybe it’s a quiet lush space, or a butterfly haven filled with nectar and color.

On a day like today, mine would be a rustic pathway between fragrant plants and large flagstone steps to a small reading shed barely big enough for a cozy chair + dog bed + wood burning stove 📚☕️🐾 -Nicole

Planting day with irrigation grids visible. This will quickly fill in next summer to become a pollinator haven with Passionflower vines, Yarrow, Echinacea, Penstemon, CA Fuchsia, Erigeron, and more. Ornamental grasses and Carex bring finer textures and breezy movement. Fragrant climbing roses, Jasmine, and Clematis will adorn the existing redwood fencing.

We carry I mmense gratitude for our clients who support this female-owned small business, care about protecting wild spaces, and invest in restorative native planting. Partnering with home owners to steward land in Sonoma County is an honor. Thank you 💛 -Kelsi and Nicole

Art in the garden to be discovered on a rainy walk. Evergreen Laurels set a verdant background while the Lomandra draw the eye to the statue. Sonoma fieldstone blunder brings weight and a sense of timeless presence to the composition, doubling as an altar. Ephemeral Anemone bloom pure white beyond.
