The Fall 2017 Master's Students of San Jose State will investigate the design and performance of discontinuous systems in the lateral force resisting system of common structures. Discontinuous systems are defined by the building code as those situations where the lateral force resisting system does not continue directly to the foundation and may be either in-plane or out-of-plane discontinuity. Th

e building codes define multiple issues related to the design loads for these systems however a wide variety of interpretations by design engineers, permit agencies and forensic engineers are found in how these issues are to be properly addressed. During the semester the class will discuss the full range of discontinuous structures including steel, concrete, masonry and timber construction. In addition to traditional engineering course work, the class will also conduct experimental test of full-scale woodframe shearwall systems built and tested by the candidates under the guidance of the instructor and SJSU technical staff.
