SJSU Gender Equity Center

SJSU Gender Equity Center The Gender Equity Center provides opportunities for students to examine how the social construction of gender impacts their lived experience.

We are a multi-cultural group dedicated to the promotion of gender issues and social change. We are committed to working together to build bridges of understanding the heal gulfs that divide us as a people. We know that we must take time to listen to each other and learn. We believe that sexism, racism, classism, and homophobia intersect and none can be healed alone. As long as one person is oppressed we are all oppressed.

We are starting a new series 'Friday Fun Facts' and today we are going to enlighten you on the topic of body positivity by sharing some facts about body hair which is still directly or sometimes unintentionally portrayed to be a shame as per our beauty standards. But it is normal to have body hair anywhere on your whole body except your soles and palms. It is your decision to keep it or to get rid of it. Today we will share on facts about where you can expect body hair and when to consider it abnormal. It is also important to keep in mind that our skin has certain sweat glands and hair follicles and different types of hair grow from there, depending on your gender, your hormonal status, and hereditary.

Our newest GenEC Rec is an article from NPR that discusses “How period tracking apps and data privacy fit into a post-Roe v. Wade climate” to help you stay informed about data security and privacy.

“In the wake of the leaked draft Supreme Court opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade, privacy experts are increasingly concerned about how data collected from period-tracking apps, among other applications, could potentially be used to penalize anyone seeking or considering an abortion.”

In honor of SJSU's Earth Day Fair today and Earth Day being on Friday, April 22nd, our Let's Talk About It topic is focused on the Environmental Impact of Menstrual Products. In the US, around 12 billion pads and 7 billion tampons are thrown out every year. In our post, we talk about different period products and sustainable swaps you could make to help the environment and overall health. We are aware that not everyone has the luxury to choose eco-friendly products, or access to any menstruation products, having to use what is available to them.

We are giving away 5 menstrual cups to students to provide that opportunity to folks who want to make the swap. To enter, fill out the form with the link in our bio or scan the QR code on slide 8. We will be choosing folks at random and will contact them on Wed. April 27th.

And for those who aren't selected or cannot purchase a reusable product, our center has an Emergency Period Mentrsuation Station where you can get a pad or tampon when on campus.

As some of you may know, April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and today for the Wellness Wednesday we wanted to address the topic of mental health. Psychodynamic Psychotherapy is proving to be extremely effective for the survivors to heal and recover from traumatic incidents and we would like to share some insights on the same.

March 31st is and is dedicated to recognizing the resilience and accomplishments of the transgender community. On this day, we celebrate the trans people amongst us, raise awareness about the struggles that they face, and advocate for more protected rights for them in a bid to reform society and empower this community.

The Gender Equity Center wants to share why today is so important and highlight some trans people you should know about. We are also providing resources that may be helpful to trans students on campus.

Check out the folks tagged and explore the different hashtags for more information!
