Cal Poly Local Connections

Cal Poly Local Connections Local Connections' goal is to help out-of-state Cal Poly students adjust to life in SLO by connecting them with members of the community!

Community Connections (SloFam) connects newly admitted out-of-state Cal Poly students to community members in San Luis Obispo to help them adjust to their new community. SloFam also connects freshmen students with each other. The idea to create a sponsor program at Cal Poly was sparked by Julia and Scott Starkey who saw the benefit of having this kind of program for their child. In their words, “A

sponsor program gives those students who are far from home the opportunity to have a local connection that offers some of the benefits of being close to family. Many of these students just need a place to get away, a home cooked meal, or simply a little peace and comfort. We greatly appreciated our son Hayden’s sponsors while he was in Annapolis at the Naval Academy and we continue to maintain a relationship with them to this day. Hayden really enjoyed the time he spent with them and his mini getaways at their home.”

This program is completely voluntary for students. Interested students can complete an application to participate and are then matched with a local sponsor. https://communityconnections.calpoly.edu

Our Story

Local Connections aims to connect newly admitted out-of-state and international Cal Poly students with members of the San Luis Obispo community. Local Connections also connects freshmen students with each other with the new addition of our Ambassador groups. The idea to create a sponsor program at Cal Poly was sparked by Julia and Scott Starkey who saw the benefit of having this kind of program for their own child. In their words, “A sponsor program gives those students who are far from home the opportunity to have a local connection that offers some of the benefits of being close to family. Many of these students just need a place to get away, a home cooked meal, or simply a little peace and comfort. Hayden really enjoyed the time he spent with them and his mini getaways at their home.” This program is completely voluntary for students. Interested students can complete an application to participate and are then connected with a local community member. https://localconnections.calpoly.edu
