We are sadly wrapping up our CSSE highlights for this year but not without mentioning Josiah Pang, a Computer Science student at Cal Poly!!

Josiah is currently working as a Junior Technical Writer at Amazon where he is building documentation framework and automated migration strategy for his team’s services. Additionally, in the Summer of 2019 Josiah worked cross functionally time design and develop specifications for new features in Workday Cloud Platform!

Josiah is currently working on a year long interdisciplinary senior project called Mobell. Josiah says “it’s been a great opportunity to work more broadly on the business side of a problem and to develop a solution alongside designers.” Featured in this photo is Josiah’s team at his engagement back in the fall! 🎉

Outside of all of these amazing accomplishments, Josiah is involved with Cru and led with IEEE for 3 years. He will be moving to Edinburgh, Scotland following graduation this Spring! Following this, Josiah will be working full time at Amazon as a Software Engineer 😊

Congratulations, Josiah! Thank you for sharing and we’re excited to see what you accomplish next 😌

And thank you to all the submissions for the CSSE shoutouts throughout the year - you have all made my job so enjoyable and I loved getting to learn more about each and everyone of you!!

With that being said, Nora is officially signing off 🎉

We are unfortunately nearing the end of the CSSE shoutouts but today we are excited to highlight Darian Nguyen, a Software Engineering student here at Cal Poly! Outside of Cal Poly Darian worked as a Junior Full-Stack Software Engineer at IFixit. Darian has been working at iFixit for over a year now - part time during school and full time in the summer. There he is a junior engineer: he takes on tasks to maintain and/or add features to the e-commerce/wiki website using React (with Hooks & TypeScript) and PHP. Because Darian works on such a small development team, each developer has a large impact on the projects they do. This really helps Darian learn how to take responsibility for his own tasks and grow as an engineer!!

Additionally, Darian previously worked with the local barbershop “Mike’s Barbershop” downtown to create a custom barbershop management web app that handles waitlisting customers and scheduling employee shifts. Darian started the barbershop project for two main reasons: he wanted to improve his skills with React and Node/Express, and he wanted to fuel his passion for building products that improve any aspect of people’s’ lives which is what Darian thinks technology should be ultimately made for! 😌

As much as he loves CS, Darian says “I like exploring hobbies outside the tech field in my free time. I played violin in the Cal Poly symphony and fenced in the Cal Poly Fencing Club for 2 years. I spend my free time hanging out with friends from KASA and EPIC, and I boulder and play a lot of Smash”. He also insists he can beat anyone in Smash 😉

Amazing! Very impressive, Darian! Thanks for sharing 😊

Until next week (for the last time!),

Hello everyone! In light of recent events please check our statement of solidarity posted last Wednesday to read about our support of the Black Lives Matter movement and all those affected by it.

With that being said, we have a few more students to highlight before the end of the year! Today we are highlighting Jasmine Patel, a Computer Science student here at Cal Poly 😊 Outside of Cal Poly, Jasmine worked as a Software Engineering intern at Workday in Pleasanton, CA. She worked on their web app for supply chain management and procurement. She also created APIs!

Jasmine is also writing and illustrating a children’s book about coding concepts! She writes “it was been so much fun to work on, and I’m about at the stage where I am ready to find a publisher”. Jasmine has been meeting with students at the ASI children’s center as well as education professionals! Jasmine says it’s both her senior project and passion project 😊

Outside of this, Jasmine loves to do art projects, jigsaw puzzles, and is even completing an 18000 piece jigsaw puzzle right now!

Super fun and impressive, thanks Jasmine!

Hello and happy Tuesday! Today we are lucky to highlight a 2018 Computer Science Alum, Max Zinkus 😊

Currently Max is working on a PhD in Computer Science at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore! There he is doing research in applied cryptography, security, and privacy.

Max’s favorite thing about Cal Poly was “definitely the sense of community, clubs like White Hat, and the strong personal connections with professors”😌

His advice for students is to consider grad school! “Get some research experience with your favorite professor and ask them about their experiences in grad school.” Max believes It’s a path to many things including professorship or accelerated career development.

This photo was taken in Hawaii at a conference Max got to attend because of research he did at Cal Poly!

Super impressive; thank you Max! 😊

Goooood morning everyone! Today we are excited to feature a Cal Poly Computer Engineering student, Mihir Deshmukh!

Mihir has worked as a Frameworks Intern at Bowers and Wilkins where he wrote frameworks software for wireless speakers and worked on mesh network software and software updates!

For previous projects at Cal Poly, Mihir chose to build an IoT (internet of things) water sprinkler controller as it required development all along the stack. While he focused on the server and firmware side, he got experience with app development as well.

Additionally, Mihir was involved in the PROVE lab for a year!

Very cool. Thanks, Mihir 😊

Hello!! Hope everyone is doing well and staying healthy 😌 Today we are featuring a CSSE Associate Professor, Paul Anderson! We have been lucky enough to have him teaching with us for 1.5 years.

Prior to working at Cal Poly, Dr. Anderson was a lead data scientist at Ceterus, Inc., a Co-founder of 4-Alpha Analytics, and a data science consultant for BoomTown, ROI!

Dr. Anderson’s hobbies prior to having kids was woodworking, playing tennis, and cooking... his hobbies post having kids are chasing the kids around! 😉

His advice for students is the following: “The most important reason for going from one place to another is to see what’s in between, and they took great pleasure in doing just that.” - Norton Juster, The Phantom Tollbooth.

Awesome, thanks Dr. Anderson!

Hello and happy Tuesday 😊 Today we have the honor of featuring on of our very own Alumna, Bridget Winn! Bridget Winn graduated just last spring with a degree in Computer Science.

Now, Bridget works in the Bay Area for Activision, specifically at a game development studio called Toys for Bob. She is also lucky enough to work with another Cal Poly Alum, Amy Lewis! At work Bridget does gameplay programming, meaning she receives information from designers about what features they want in the game, then she implements those features with lots of help from her team.

Bridget’s favorite thing about Cal Poly was the computing department. She says she loves every professor who let her cry in their office!!

Bridget’s advice to students is “if you want to go into games, take graphics classes, especially the real-time class. If you KNOW that you would do better in a different section of class, wait and take that section if you can.” And lastly, “It all works out. and work is way better than school. Take more naps? Exercise?”

Amazing; thanks, Bridget!! 😊

Hello hello! Happy Wednesday 😊 Today we are featuring one of our Computer Science students, Richa Gadgil!

Last summer Richa worked at Apple as a Software Engineering and Machine Learning intern. There she was part of the Apple Watch Health Sensing and Study Group of the Human Interface Devices Group. Additionally, during the summer of her freshman year, Richa was a Software Engineering intern at Project Jupyter on Cal Poly’s campus!

On campus Richa is the co-founder of the Cal Poly Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence (CSAI) club where individuals work on NIMBUS: a voice assistant that answers questions about the CSSE department! She is also the natural language processing lead for this project, meaning she examines how the computer interprets human language and construct an appropriate response to user queries.

On top of all this, Richa conducts artificial intelligence research at the Cal Poly Institute for Advanced Technology and Public Policy 😊

Very impressive. Thanks, Richa!!

Hello and happy Tuesday 😊Today we are excited to feature a Computer Science graduate of Spring 2017, Cara Pew!

Currently Cara works at Google as a Software Engineer. She started in the Engineering Residency Program (a rotational program for new graduates) and now works on the Firestone team, which is a document database under Google Cloud. Cara currently works on Data Plane, which is basically everything related to how Google stores and retrieves data!

Cara’s favorite part about Cal Poly was her involvement with WISH. Having a group of women to go through CS struggles with was wonderful, and she met so many good friends through it. As president her last year, Cara also got the opportunity to mentor a lot of younger students, and loved seeing how they succeeded since then!

Cara’s advice to students is to try hard to really learn concepts in classes- not just memorizing the information for a final, but try to see how the content is relevant to real software systems. It will help in future jobs!

Thanks Cara 😊 Until next week,
