Cal Poly Symphony and Choirs Concert: 'Symphonic Expressions' is this Saturday! The groups will perform Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and Igor Stravinsky’s “Symphony of Psalms.” Beethoven’s symphony is one of the most recognizable pieces of all time, and Stravinsky’s represents the height of his neoclassical period. Cal Poly Spring Jazz Concert: Sounds of Harmony will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Spanos Theatre! The University Jazz Band’s set will include Don Menza’s “Dizzyland,” Ryan Haines’ ballad “There’s a Letter from Home,” and Marshall Gilkes’ “4711 Special.” The Jazz Combos will feature “Inevitable” by one of its members, Oscar Cervarich, plus Ray Barretto’s “Indestructible,” Duke Pearson’s “Jeannine” and more. The Cal Poly Arab Music Ensemble Spring Concert is this Saturday! The program will be shared with a special ensemble of guest artists performing Iranian music! The set with Bahram Osqueezadeh, Siamak Bozorgi, Arash Bahrololoomi, and Javid John Mosadeghi will be centered on "Dastgah-e Rast Panjgah," an intricate and expansive modal system in Persian classical music. Cal Poly Soundings: 'Music of the Spheres' with [Switch~ Ensemble] will have two showings this week! At 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday in the PAC Pavilion. Soundings is an interdisciplinary program that joins original compositions by music technology and composition students with contemporary choreography by dance students. The performances will feature visiting artists T.J. Borden, cello, and Mari Kawamura, piano, of the [Switch~ Ensemble]. Julie Herndon is the show’s director, and Diana Stanton is the dance director. Guest artists Rafael Montero, tenor; and John Sloboda, piano; will present a recital of the songs of Pedro Ximénez Abril Tirado at 11:10 a.m. Thursday in Room 218 of the Davidson Music Center (No. 45)! Ximénez (1780-1856) was one of Latin America’s most successful and prolific composers of the early 19th century. Though admission is free, a parking permit is required to park on campus.
