Happy Anniversary! In September of 2001, the sign we see outside the Orfalea College of Business was unveiled, marking a new era for Cal Poly students. As we celebrate 25 years since the college was named in honor of Paul Orfalea’s $15 million gift (Paul Orfalea dedicated the naming to his parents, Al and Virginia.), over the next year, we will share 25 reasons the college is so great in our “25 for 25” feature.

There’s a buzz next to the business building: Trucks with satellites are lined up along California Blvd. as ESPN prepares to air Cal Poly’s opening football game – the first time the Mustangs have been aired on national TV for a home game.

The Cal Poly football program is also inaugurating the new John Madden Football Center, and the Mustang Athletics Department is retiring the Pro Football Hall of Fame coach’s Cal Poly jersey.

The Mustangs host Idaho on Friday, Aug. 28. Kickoff is 7:05 p.m.

Several guests celebrated the new, expanded HotHouse location in downtown San Luis Obispo during a ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday. The 24,000-square-foot building, at 1134 and 1144 Chorro Street, was once the home of Copeland's Sports. Now it is home to the expanded Cal Poly Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship (CIE) HotHouse and Mustang Shop downtown, creating more space for entrepreneurship, coworking, events, retail and community connections.

The new HotHouse fills a long-vacant, large building near the Downtown Centre, helping to add vitality to the downtown core while increasing visibility for the CIE.

Speakers at the ribbon-cutting included Cal Poly President Jeffrey D. Armstrong; Orfalea College of Business Dean Damon Fleming; San Luis Obispo Mayor Erica A.
