More than 300 Cal Poly Maritime Academy cadets are now underway across the Pacific aboard Training Ship Golden Bear for the 2026 Summer Sea Term, the vessel’s final Pacific voyage after 30 years of service to the academy and the first since the transition to Cal Poly Maritime Academy.

With stops in Tahiti, Fiji and Honolulu, cadets are gaining practical experience aboard the vessel as they navigate conditions at sea and prepare for careers across the maritime industry.

As Golden Bear enters its final chapter ahead of retirement in 2026, the voyage represents both a longstanding tradition and the beginning of a new era for the academy.

Cal Poly students in mechanical engineering and computer engineering recently welcomed back alumnus Paulo Younse (Mechanical Engineering, ’02) for a hands-on workshop ahead of Engineering Project Expo.

Younse, a robotics engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory who works on Mars Sample Return systems, met with the Rover Claw and Rover Port 2 senior project teams as students demonstrated robotic systems, computer vision tools and mini-rover technology developed in support of Poly1rover.

Students evaluated their robotic arm claw and vision system using a Mars sample tube Younse brought from JPL, while also receiving technical feedback and insight from an alumnus contributing to NASA mission work.

The projects will be featured at the May 29 Engineering Project Expo, where nine mini-rover-related senior projects by students in electrical, mechanical, computer, general and aerospace engineering will be showcased.

Thank you to Paulo Younse, JPL and Cal Poly lecturer and Poly1rover adviser Rich Murray for supporting the next generation of engineers.
