Turning play into purpose!
Computer Engineering Students Noah Tran, Srinitya Choudary Doppalapudi, Jacob Nater and Audrey Hansell worked with Psychology students together in a cross-disciplinary project creating a collaborative puzzle platform that’s more than just a game; it’s a research tool.

By bringing people together, specifically older adults, to solve puzzles online, the project helps study cognition, social connection and loneliness, showing how something, simple and fun can drive meaningful scientific insights.

Meet Vincent Le!

A first-year CPE student and CPE 100 Mentee!

Who is your mentor?
My mentor is Alex Jefferies, a third year with industry experience.

What made you want to become aMentee with CPE?
I wanted to become a Mentee with CPE because I came into Cal Poly knowing that this school would best prepare me with industry experience, and I've been a big dreamer, aspiring to be ready to work at well-paying tech companies. In my first quarter, I wanted to get an internship as soon as possible, so I joined Mentoring with CPE to give me guidance to work towards that goal.

What do you enjoy most about being part of the mentorship community?
The most enjoyable part is how knowledgeable the mentors are in the community. My mentor specifically has organized meetings and resources for us to prepare for the upcoming career fair and resume reviews alongside how to be ahead of my class with CPE videos, 3rd year advice, and hobbies I should pursue to be a hirable candidate.

What are a few things you like to do outside of school and professional development?
Outside of classes, I'm involved with Hack4Impact and Cal Poly Racing FSAE as a developer and firmware engineer respectively. I'm an event coordinator intern for the Nikkei Student Union, a member of the Vietnamese Student Association, and a performer for the Lion Dancing Team at Cal Poly. I love trying out every new item on the menu around campus, playing video games with my roommates, and doing 2 AM walks to the off-campus Taco Bell.

Meet Nathan Manesh, a 3rd year CPE Student and Industry Mentee!

Who is your mentor?:
Larry Landis

What made you want to become an Industry Mentee with CPE?:
As a third-year student, I was starting to think more intentionally about which area(s) of CPE to specialize in. This program gave me the perfect opportunity to connect with industry professionals, learn from their experiences, and get advice on advancing my career directly from people working in the field.

What do you enjoy most about being part of the mentorship community?:
I really enjoy building a relationship with Larry and learning from his experiences in the industry. The roundtable events are also amazing—I love hearing different perspectives and stories from other mentors and mentees in the program.

What are a few things you like to do outside of school and professional development?:
I serve as the Mentorship Director for the CPE peer mentoring program, where I help recruit mentors, pair them with incoming students, and organize events. I’m also involved in the NSF-funded Breaking the Binary grant for CPE through the Student Support committee, focused on expanding mentoring and tutoring services. Outside of school, I love staying active—you’ll find me working out, cycling, or running around beautiful San Luis Obispo!

Meet Luke, one of our CPE tutors!

What inspired you to become a CPE tutor? :
I was looking for an on-campus job, and tutoring stood out to me because I liked that it would force me to revisit old concepts and classes. I also really enjoy helping others learn, especially because it deepens my own understanding of a topic.

What do you enjoy most about working with students in the tutoring program?:
I think what I enjoy most is helping students understand not just how to do something, but why it works. Those are the moments when you see it “click” for the student. I also love getting a question that I don’t know the answer to because then we both learn something.

What do you enjoy doing outside of tutoring and CPE coursework?:
I like playing basketball and pickleball, going to EDM concerts/festivals, reading, and spending time with friends.

Need some extra help with CPE? The Tutor Center is located in Building 20-100 and is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 6–9 PM, plus Sunday from 12–4 PM. Check out the CPE website to see the tutor schedule and stop by!

Meet Nina St. John, a 5th year CPE Student!

What is your favorite part of CPE?
My favorite part of CPE is working on special research problems with professors.

What are your goals for the future?
I hope to publish my research and attend graduate school abroad, focusing on robotics.

Do you have any hobbies?
I love running and working out. I’ve just escaped the trenches of D1 athletics (no regrets. I loved it), and now I’m figuring out life post-sports. My favorite thing is exploring with friends and family… and I definitely have a bit of a tea addiction.
