🎬 Movie Screening: Rebel with a Clause

The English Department is pleased to invite students to an upcoming screening of Rebel with a Clause, a smart and engaging docu-comedy about grammar! Filmmaker Brandt Johnson and grammar expert Ellen Jovin will be sharing their work in person at the Palm Theatre next Monday night.

Jovin will set up her Grammar Table before and after the screening, answering your most pressing grammar questions. The evening will also include a Q&A with Jovin and Johnson and a book signing for Jovin’s national bestselling book.

The department’s Fall Social for English Major Transfer Students was a great success! New and continuing majors were able to meet faculty, including Dr. Krista Sarraf and Dr. Colum Yip, and enjoy a wonderful dinner at Petra Mediterranean Pizza & Grill in Downtown San Luis Obispo.

The Soda Lake Book Tour is Here! 📚

This is not a hallucination. John C Hampsey will appear in bookstores across the country (and across the pond) to share conversation, sign copies, and read excerpts from his new novel, Soda Lake. To celebrate the release in Hardback on October 21st, the book tour will kick off in San Luis Obispo with a special pre-release reading on October 17th. Limited copies of the novel will be available for purchase. Check out the schedule above to find a tour stop near you!

🎙️✨ Check out English faculty member Lisa Coffman’s debut audio piece, recently featured on NPR’s All Things Considered!

She tells the story of master luthier Jean Horner from the Cumberland Plateau, a shorter version of a longer project she created for the nonprofit Living Traditions.
It was her first audio piece, made with equipment from various CLA departments and with support from Cal Poly Journalism tech Thomas Morales 🙌

Our final full week in the Lake District 🌿✨

We started with a visit to Beatrix Potter’s house, stepping into the charm and creativity of her world 🐭📖. Then it was our third session at the Jerwood Centre, where we captured our poetic selves through artwork and reflection.

Midweek adventures took us to Aira Force waterfall and the peaceful shores of Ullswater, where we also visited the beautiful old St Martin’s Church ⛪️.

In our last Jerwood session, we discussed poetry in a changing world and got to see some literary treasures (including a first edition of Frankenstein and Wordsworth’s own annotated copy of Paradise Lost 😍📚)

We ended the week with a garden party at Dove Cottage, filled with poetry recitations, laughter, and the bittersweet sense that our time here is coming to a close. So sad to be leaving soon, but so full of gratitude for all we’ve experienced 💫🍃

Finishing off our first full week in the Lake District with a wonderful day in nature! 🌿🐑⛰️ Today began at Castlerigg Stone Circle, where we stood among ancient stones surrounded by quiet hills and early morning mist. After that, we headed to the Keswick Catbells. We took a boat across Derwentwater, then hiked up into the fells. The views from the top were unbelievable, and completely worth the climb. Being out here made all of us feel more connected to the land and to each other.

Today in the Lake District 🌿 First stop: Rydal Caves for a productive class + group poetry recitations with an unforgettable backdrop. Then onto Rydal Mount, the Wordsworths’ home, where we wandered through the house and gardens, learning about the life behind such fascinating literary icons. A wonderful day full of nature and poetry… and we look forward to our next session at the Jerwood Centre TOMORROW! 📝✨
