Mechanical Engineering major Alec Savoye interned with Lam Research’s Aether Product Engineering. There, he worked on mechanical design for various projects, particularly in-house test equipment. Fluid dynamics were a crucial part of his work, and Alec felt that understanding the fundamentals and having experience with mechanical design made the biggest difference in the workplace.

Alec shared his favorite part of the internship experience:

“I've had a number of exciting or memorable experiences while working in the Mechanical Engineering team in Aether Product Engineering. My favorite so far has to be the first time that I got to walk through the main research laboratory and related equipment rooms. Seeing so much state-of-the-art work being done with such precision was really cool. It was also nice to actually see so many of the products that I had only seen on a computer screen as part of the virtual work. When you actually look at these massive 10-foot-tall devices that are capable of rearranging individual atoms on a wafer, it makes you feel pretty proud to be in a place where you can contribute to that kind of technology.”

Mechanical Engineering 4th year Nathaniel Burtnett interned with Lam Research in Fremont, CA! As a Systems Engineering Intern, Nathaniel worked with supply chain, electro-mechanical engineering, manufacturing, sales, suppliers, and the additive manufacturing team to research Additive Manufacturing as a solution for cryogenic coolant applications. He also performed clean room testing on several machines and helped with studies alongside many different engineers. As part of the team, Nathaniel had the chance to attend Semicon West, networking with industry leaders and witnessing cutting-edge semiconductor technology.

Nathaniel credits Cal Poly’s Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer classes for providing some of the skills that were most important at Lam. He has this to say to all of his fellow ME students: “I believe, as a Mechanical Engineering Student, that internships are the most valuable thing you can supplement your education with. The novelty, the process of designing and working with teams, and the experience of what a workplace expects of an engineer all make it enormously valuable. I believe that Lam Research stood out, even amongst other internships, because of the expectations that they have of you and the enormous amount of support they give you. 10/10, would recommend.”

Today, we’re spotlighting Elle Nilson, a 4th year Mechanical Engineering student who interned with Acorn Product Development! At Acorn, Elle was primarily focused on product assembly as well as lab work, procurement, and small impact design. One of their favorite tasks was assembling the first iteration of a fluidics subsystem for Acorn's cell sorting machine.

Learn by Doing has been a key part of Elle’s internship experience: “Having a hands-on background in using electrical measurement devices, manufacturing tools and being educated SolidWorks design engineering have all significantly helped me contribute in the workplace of an engineering firm.”

Looking forward, Elle will be continuing with Acorn for a second summer internship and plans on exploring the engineering product development industry as a career. Great work, Elle!

Cal Poly ME presents its first student internship spotlight of the year! This time, we are featuring Harrison Van Der Walt, a materials engineering student who recently interned with Aptera Motors in Carlsbad CA. As part of Composites R&D, Harrison had the opportunity to take on a variety of tasks. His experiences ranged from doing layups for composite beams to making and comparing molding processes to testing with the suspension and chassis teams. One of his favorite experiences was getting the chance to drive the suspension testing chassis and experience the project he was working on personally.

His time with Aptera Motors has also increased his excitement for several upcoming materials engineering classes covering topics he worked on, including composites and fracture failures. Great work, Harrison!

After having their proposal accepted by NASA last year, four CENG seniors saw success at the Micro-g NExT competition, testing their experimental device under conditions astronauts will face in outer space. In the team’s words:

"We had an unforgettable experience participating in NASA's Micro-g NExT competition and testing our device at the Neutral Buoyancy Lab at Johnson Space Center. After months of designing our Extra Vehicular Activity Lunar Calibration Device, we are thrilled to say testing was a success!"

Excellent work!
