Upon his release in 1990, Mandela played a pivotal role in negotiations to dismantle apartheid and establish multiracial elections. In 1994, he was elected South Africa's first black president and paved the way for aspiring leaders of all backgrounds. He stepped down from the presidency in 1999, leaving an enduring legacy as a global symbol of peace, forgiveness, and triumph of human dignity over oppression.
