Cohort 32 Spotlight on Kylie Wiesenhutter, 4th Grade ELAR and Social Studies teacher at Naumann Elementary School in Leander ISD.
Personal motto: “Choose joy and let your light shine”
With this being my first year of teaching and completing my Masters, there is so much that you go through each day. If you are a teacher you know every single day is different with challenges trying to bring you down and dim your light. This quote is truly a reminder to be my true joyous self!
Favorite spot in your classroom:
My favorite spot in my classroom is our carpet where we come together every morning for class meetings. It has become one of my favorite parts of the day, and my students look forward to it as well. During this time, students are able to share their thoughts, express their voices, and truly be heard by their peers. Even though it is just a carpet, it is a place where we build community, practice listening, and support one another as classmates!
My best teaching moment this year has to relate back to my peer coaching assignment as a Teacher Fellow. The lesson that I implemented truly was the most powerful lesson I have ever seen my students do. They first got the chance to create their own rubrics for informative writing. Next, they were able to grade an informative writing piece based on their rubric! For me, it was such a proud teacher moment getting to see them become a “teacher” and self-assess on something they made themselves.
Our favorite classroom activities are silly sports and goofy games! My students love having the chance to laugh and have fun together while building rapport with one another. As a teacher, this is truly a time where you get a glance of ALL their personalities!
A book we enjoyed together this year was…
“How Full is Your Bucket” For Kids Written by Tom Rath and Mary Reckmeyer.
This book was one of the first I got to read to my students. It truly made a difference in my students' actions in the way they speak and act to one another. Our bucket filling station quickly became my students' favorite spot in the classroom, where they can write a bucket filler for anyone in our classroom!
