The Department of Modern Languages helps prepare Texas State University students for careers in education, international relations and business, and foreign service, as well as other professions. We offer majors and minors in Spanish, French and German, a minor in Japanese. We offer a comprehensive master's program in Spanish with courses in literature, linguistics, language, culture and film. In

addition, through Extension Studies, the department offers courses in Arabic, Chinese, Italian, and American Sign Language.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 2026 World Languages and Literatures Awards Ceremony!

We are very proud of our hardworking students, especially those graduating this week. Congratulations to all of you!

Congratulations to Travis Ortiz for representing Texas State at the 60th Annual Southwest Council of Latin American Studies (SCOLAS) conference in Mexico City, March 5–7, 2026!

Travis participated in a poetry reading panel, presenting “Extranjero en mi propia tierra y otros poemas,” showcasing contemporary Latin American literature, poetry, and cultural identity on an international stage.

Congratulations to our recent graduate Memphis Mallory (BA in German and Anthropology), soon-to-be graduate Martin Rivera (BA in History and Education), and graduate student Ryan McBroom (MEd in Management of Technical Education) on being named Fulbright semifinalists!

Memphis: Semifinalist for the Fulbright Combined Award in Austria

✨ Meet Professor Talarczyk, our amazing French lecturer who’s always chasing new adventures around the world!

🎶 Favorite hobby? "Is getting lost in every city I visit considered a hobby? If not, then going to concerts! I try to attend as many as possible - music is one of my favorite forms of art. ”

🗣️ Favorite language? “I would say Italian; it’s such a beautiful language. But recently, I’ve been exposed to more Portuguese, and it’s beautiful too! I studied Italian for five years in college, but now I’m considering studying Portuguese.”

🐾 Do you have any pets? “I don’t, but - surprisingly enough - my family cat’s name in France is Cowboy. ”

💭 Anything you’d like students to know about you? “I believe that with enough self-confidence, we can achieve anything we set our minds to."

🌍 Do you collect anything? "Nothing but travel stories."

✨ Honor the lives and memories of those who have passed at our community altar, featuring guest speakers and cultural reflection.
