On behalf of Mojgan Behmand, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty...
"Longtime English faculty member Dr. Alan Cumings has passed away at the age of 77 after a long period of ill health.
Dr. Cumings received his BA in English at the University of California, Berkeley, and continued on to the University of Wisconsin, Madison, for his MA and PhD in English with special training in Communication. He joined the Dominican adjunct faculty in 2000, specializing in teaching communication and research writing. Prior to joining the Dominican faculty, Dr. Cumings was an instructor in computer graphics; an instructor of English as a Second Language in adult and community education; and an editorial designer and art director at a publishing company. He also worked as a freelance copywriter and graphic designer in the Bay Area.
Dr. Cumings authored newspaper articles on the subjects of resumé writing and job seeking skills for teens and college students, and he put that knowledge to use in teaching and advising his students at Dominican. Sometimes viewed as quirky, he was beloved by his students and was a finalist for the Teacher of the Year Award in Spring 2008. Those of us in the English Department remember Alan as a kind and soft-spoken colleague with a dry sense of humor who authored incredibly effective study guides, and was inordinately dedicated to his students.
Dr. Cumings is survived by his wife Claire, who is also known to many in the Dominican community for her staff role in the Department of Psychology. No services will be held; however, if you wish to express your condolences, you may do so through posting on the Neptune Society obituary page."
Our sincerest condolences.
