October 15th was the official day recognizing the end of Latinx Heritage Month! We hope that you have been exposed and absorbed the beautiful contributions that Latinx around the world have made. In honor of the end of this recognition month, we wanted to share with you that knowledge doesn’t have to end there. There are many ways you can give back to the community by connecting with your local organizations, amplifying Latinx voices, sharing their art, stories, and experiences, and recognizing the diversity included among Latinx. Latinx are a multidimensional group of peoples, and racial identity on government documents to school surveys, can raise some questions for oneself. Many people to this day are shocked to learn of Afro-Latinx, Indigenous people, and Mestizos (of mixed race, typically of Spanish and Indigenous ancestry) residing in their own homeland because of the erasure the term Latinx/Hispanic brings. As we conclude Latinx Heritage Month, we remember those who have been erased from our history, those who are seen as “not Latinx enough”, those who do not know what box to check under race, and those who strive to decolonize and reconnect with our roots.
