Do you REALLY want to go from SBCC to a great University? Here are some some suggestions from a high tech employer to help you reach your dream:
1. Pick friends who are goal oriented and are working hard to reach the same goal. Hold each other accountable to study and challenge each other to get the best grades.
2. Choose success over fun. You can have fun, but not when it hurts your grades and your future.
3. Reward yourself after the hard work, but not before..
4. Dress, behave and act like a winner, like the person you want to become.
5. Get the A in the class with the WORST teacher; you will learn more in the fire than in the air conditioning.
6. Don't get a credit card and learn to live on a budget. You need to learn money skills now so you can succeed in life. (See #2).
7. Don't listen to the negative people who don't have your dreams. You determine what doors will open for you; just keep working at it and knocking o doors.
8. Stay away from ma*****na. It is a de-motivational drug and sure to chill you out and make you apathetic. Not a good thing when you need to drive toward and focus on your goals.
9. Sharpen your vocabulary. Read some high end newspapers and books. Stop saying things that make you seem uneducated, like "Me and my friend", "I don't got no...", "I graduated high school" (no, the high school graduated YOU),
10. Apply to the best schools and don't convince yourself (or let others convince you) that you can't get in or pay for it. Apply, see if you get in, and then figure it out. Shoot for the top!

How do you make your monthly budget at SBCC? Here are my tips:
1. Set aside no more than $350 per month for food. Make yourself a sack lunch every day. It's super easy and really cheap, just like your mom did for you in elementary school. That will save you about $200 a month!
2. Stop smoking and drinking--those habits are really expensive!
3. Rent your textbooks on-line; super cheap and easy to return.
4. Find a place close to school so you can walk it.
5. Leave your car at home and get on the "away at college" discount on your car insurance.
6. When you make a dinner, make enough for three or four, then freeze the extras in their own freezer Ziplock bags. You can microwave them for other nights (or drop them into boiling water to heat them up). Saves time AND money!
7. Find a job on-campus or really close by so you don't spend a lot of time commuting to your job.
8. If you have extra money at the end of the month, try to live off a smaller budget.
9. Get a cheap Keurig because Starbucks is a budget killer!
10. And finally, buy what you NEED not what you WANT. And when you buy, try to always buy it when it is on sale!

How do you stay away from trouble at college? We all know how fun college can be, especially since your parents are no longer in the house and able to tell you what to do. Now you have freedom, but how do you prevent your life without rules from ruining your studies and future? What are your secrets to success?
