Congrats to Associate Professor Isabel Bayrakdarian, who has been named the recipient of the Fall 2018 UCSB Interdisciplinary Humanities Center Collaborative Arts Teaching Program Award! The award is focused on community-engaged visual and performing art projects housed within UCSB courses, in this case, Dr. Bayrakdarian’s Opera Outreach course (MUS A139/A239), which is offered annually within the Department of Music. Dr. Bayrakdarian has been awarded funding to produce Evan Mack’s 2016 children’s opera, "Lucinda y las Flores de la Nochebuena," based on the Mexican folktale of the same name that tells the story of how the poinsettia became a meaningful symbol of the holiday season. In Fall 2019, students from UCSB’s Voice Program will perform this 45-minute one-act opera for local elementary school students during several matinee performances at UCSB’s Karl Geiringer and Lotte Lehmann Concert halls. The project will also include one evening performance for the UCSB, Goleta, and Santa Barbara communities. Read more at http://music.ucsb.edu/news/announcement/1777.
