Calling on our Bay Area alums: We hope you can join us for a special walkthrough of THE LONG MIDDLE, the latest exhibition by Ranu Mukherjee, Dean of the School of Film/Video, at Gallery Wendi Norris in San Francisco.

Following the walkthrough, we’ll gather at High Horse for a drink and light bites hosted by CalArts Alumni Engagement in partnership with Alumni Council member Perry Meigs (Art MFA 98). Guests are welcome to attend either portion of the event—or both!

📅 Saturday, June 6 at 4pm: Gallery walkthrough with Ranu Mukherjee
📍 Gallery Wendi Norris, 436 Jackson Street, San Francisco

📅 Saturday, June 6 at 5pm: Alumni Social at High Horse
📍 High Horse, 582 Washington Street, San Francisco

For three decades, Mukherjee has questioned Western and human-centric narratives, imagining a more tender and attentive way of relating to the world. Her new body of work merges the autobiographical with the political, ecological, and geological—linking the pressures of mid-life, motherhood, and personal transformation with the threats of climate crisis, resource extraction, and species loss.

Add NEW SKIN to your summer reading list. Huge congratulations to alum Sarah Wang (Critical Studies MFA 08) on her recently published debut novel, which explores the dark side of Los Angeles’ cosmetic surgery industry through the story of an enmeshed mother-daughter relationship.

Wang’s work has appeared in THE NEW YORKER, THE ATLANTIC, AND HARPER’S BAZAAR, among many other publications, weaving themes of psychoanalysis, contemporary art, class, race, and feminism.

NEW SKIN has been praised as “a truly original debut” by former CalArts faculty member Maggie Nelson and awarded a starred Publishers Weekly review.

The Los Angeles Metro’s D Line Extension just opened, and CalArts alumni are behind two large-scale installations located at Wilshire/La Cienega Station:

Soo Kim’s (Art MFA 95) NIGHT / QUARTZ stretches across the new station’s platform walls as a fragmented, dreamlike cityscape assembled from photographs of buildings along the Wilshire Corridor and imagery from cities around the world.

Todd Gray’s (Art BFA 79, MFA 89) MINING THE ARCHIVE: S. CHARLES LEE, ARCHITECT, transforms archival drawings of the historic Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills into a sprawling architectural collage rendered in vivid blue and white.

Future stations will feature works by Gala Porras-Kim (Art MFA 09) and Victoria Fu (Art MFA 05), who will be joining a broader group of CalArtians who have contributed to Metro Art projects over the years.

We’re thrilled to share that alumni (and 2025 MacArthur Fellows) Tuan Andrew Nguyen (Art MFA 04) and Gala Porras-Kim (Art MFA 09), are among the artists participating in the 61st Venice Biennale’s central exhibition, IN MINOR KEYS.

The landmark exhibition features 110 participants from around the world. It was conceived by the late curator Koyo Kouoh, and realized by a team of collaborators following her passing.

Nguyen debuts ÑI DEMOON ÑOO DELLUSI, a two-channel video installation that weaves together interviews, spoken narratives, and archival material centered on the West African figure Bouba Chinois.

Porras-Kim, selected for the Applied Arts Pavilion in collaboration with the Victoria and Albert Museum, examines the relationships between cultural artifacts, museums, and the institutional frameworks that shape how they are interpreted and preserved.

The 61st International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, runs through Sunday, Nov. 22, at the Giardini, the Arsenale, and locations throughout Venice.

2026: The class that roared (or something like that).

Every graduating class leaves its mark, and this year's ceremony certainly had its moments. But the one that matters most? Our graduates crossing that stage.

One thing we heard loud and clear: Our students are passionate about this community and its future.

To our graduates: Carry that fire forward. Build boldly. Lead thoughtfully. And know that CalArts remains proud of what you've accomplished, and curious about who you will become.

Congratulations to the Class of 2026. And sincere thanks to the families, friends, and supporters who celebrated with us, near and far.
