Need to file your tax returns? Let us do it for you! The certified volunteer tax preparers of Students in VITA at UCSC are available Wednesday and Thursday of finals week from 1-5 PM at the SlugCents office.

Can't do it now? Come in during Spring Quarter! We're closed for Spring Break but we'd love to help you when we reopen on Monday, March 30.

Want to pay $0 to file federal AND state tax returns online? Send an email to [email protected] with "File Taxes Free" in the subject line and we will send you a link to the free version of TaxSlayer, an online tax preparation software similar to TurboTax, FreeTaxUSA, and other tax sites that advertise "free" but don't always deliver.

If you have tax questions, please drop by the SlugCents office. We cannot answer tax questions via email (sorry!).

It's not too late to waive UCShip health insurance for Spring Quarter! The deadline submit your waiver and required documents by March 13, 2026.

UCSC students, staff, and community members who are U.S. citizens or residents for tax purposes and had $69,000 or less in income in 2025are invited to the SlugCents Financial Wellness Program for free tax preparation from the IRS-certified tax preparers of Students in VITA at UCSC. Our tax site is open Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, 1-5 PM, through April 15 (closed for Spring Break) at the SlugCents office, located at Hahn Student Services, room 203 (upstairs next to Financial Aid). Enjoy dinner and card crafting for someone special this Monday, February 9 from 5-7 PM at the SlugCents office! We will provide the food, all the supplies for your card creations, and postage stamps so you can send them before February 14.

Special guests from the Sustainability Office and the SlugCents Financial Wellness Program will be there to share ideas for making Valentine's Day gifts more sustainable and less expensive.

Registration is required - seating is limited.

1098-T tax forms for are now available! Here's how to get yours:
1) Log into MyUCSC
2) Tap the "My Account $" tile
3) In the sidebar, tap "1098-T Tax Form" and then tap the "Get My 1098-T Form" button
4) Set the "Year" on the top left of the page to 2025 (or whatever tax year you need)
5) Tap "View/Print My 1098-T" to get a pdf

What is a 1098-T tax form used for?
Students who file tax returns or those who can claim a student as a dependent may be able to use information on the 1098-T to claim an education credit on their taxes.

Students in VITA at UCSC is a student-guided organization where you can train to become a volunteer tax preparer through the IRS/VITA program.

Come to our first information and training meeting at the SlugCents office, Hahn Student Services, room 203, next to Financial Aid - choose one of two meeting options:
Tuesday, January 13, 5-6 PM OR
Wednesday, January 14, 5-6 PM

Benefits of participation include:

Who can volunteer?
All UCSC students who can commit to attending weekly training meetings during Winter Quarter and working as a volunteer tax preparer for approx. 6-8 hours per week through April 15.

All majors welcome; past VITA volunteers and Accounting, Business, and Economics majors encouraged to participate in a leadership role

Don’t let Black Friday FOMO put your finances in jeopardy! Make sure you’re shopping at well-known stores with customer protection and return policies that ensure you won’t get ripped off.

And one more tip: make a list of the gifts you plan to buy and how much you can spend on each person BEFORE you shop. Doing this can help you stay within your budget and avoid overspending.

P.S. If you need help with budgeting or you think you are spending too much and want to stop, SlugCents is here for you. Come in for a judgement-free session with a peer mentor who can provide guidance and resources to help you feel better about your money decisions.

Come to SlugCents for treats and crafts this Thursday and Friday, Oct. 30th and 31st! All craft supplies, hot chocolate, tea, and baked-yummy things will be provided.

- Thursday, Oct. 30th, 2-5 PM: Make a cutie pumpkin out of felt, fabric, or a spare sock with Stitching Slugs, a student-led club for fans of the fiber arts.

- Friday, Oct. 31st, 12-5 PM: Trick-or-treat for candy or stay to paint a flower pot and take home a tiny adorable plant - or both!
