Re: Move out the right way, and earn a FREE large pizza!

** Please note the information below does not pertain to students living on campus. If you live on campus, you will be contacted by the housing office with your own move-out procedures. **

This is the second notice as a reminder to discard your unwanted items in an environmentally conscious way. We still have pizza coupons available for all who reserve a bulky item pick up!

As you know, campus has long sought to lower its environmental impact. When you move out at the end of the quarter, it may seem generous to leave unwanted items on the sidewalk with a “FREE” sign. Unfortunately, this material often ends up in our landfills, waterways and even the bay. To minimize our impact, we ask that you plan in advance how you will properly dispose of these items. Here are some helpful resources:
• Donate: Take your non-bulky and smaller unwanted items to the closest donation center, such as Goodwill or Project Purr.
• Recycle Right: Use the Recycle Guide or What Goes Where App as a reference when choosing what to place in your blue recycle cart. Carts with contamination (such as food residue) may not be recyclable and you could contaminate a whole truckload of items making them useless for recycling.
• Swap or Sell Online: You can offer unwanted items for free or sale on these sites: Freecycle, Craigslist, Next Door Santa Cruz, or Facebook Marketplace
• Your Last Resort: For bulky items that can no longer be reused, schedule a pick-up with the city of Santa Cruz in June or July. These pickups are only for large bulky items that will be taken to the landfill. This includes mattresses, box springs, couches, living room chairs and other large items. To arrange a bulky item pick-up, register at this link. (Be advised there is a fee to use this service, but it is very inexpensive compared to being fined for illegally dumping your unwanted items or paying a private service to pick up your items.) The first 50 sign-ups for bulky item pickup will receive a coupon for a free large pizza from Woodstock’s Pizza! To receive your coupon, like the Good Neighbor Initiative page, then send an email to [email protected], stating that you signed up for bulky item pickup. Please provide a mailing address where we can send your coupon. All requests for pizza coupons via the bulky item pick-up will be verified with the city of Santa Cruz.
If you see improperly discarded items in your neighborhood, call the Environmental Compliance Department with the city at (831) 420-6050. If you have questions about the bulky-item pick-up or Move Out Program, please send an email to [email protected].

Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our environment and landfill free of items that can be reused!

The Fire This Time: Race at Boiling Point

Jun 5, 2020 / 1:00 pm
UC Irvine

The nation and the world are bearing witness to yet another spate of police violence against Black people. Heavily armored vehicles roll through city streets. The long-historical fissures of American life and justice are now nakedly visible. This is an urgent moment, one that calls for resolve, thought, and action.

This Friday, June 5, at 1:00 pm PST join us on Zoom for The Fire This Time: Race at Boiling Point, a conversation with Angela Y. Davis (Emerita, UC Santa Cruz), Herman Gray (Emeritus, UC Santa Cruz), Gaye Theresa Johnson (UC Los Angeles), Robin D. G. Kelley (UCLA), and Josh Kun (USC).
