'The rapid rise in e-commerce, and the resulting increase in B2C shipping, has revolutionized how consumers receive products. However, this convenience has come at a significant environmental cost, with packaging waste a primary concern. Single-use plastics, often used for protective packaging, are a major contributor to pollution and resource depletion...Redesigning and rethinking sustainable shipping packaging for environmental impact can be vital in addressing these issues.'

A note from Cruz Foam CEO, John Felts on the blog- ‘Last week I attended an event hosted by one of our investors, the climate impact investment group, Regeneration VC. As the answers to our climate and pollution problems seem in disarray, The ReAssembly convened solutionists to bring the pieces back together.

As part of the event, I was invited to keynote and share a bit about our work here at Cruz Foam, as well as introduce guest speaker Sarah Luisi, Vice President of Group Strategic Sourcing & Operations America’s Sustainable & Responsible Sourcing, LVMH Americas.

“Cruz Foam isn’t packaging”. Packaging is the problem we are working to solve. Our deep technology solutions eliminate the need for these forever materials.

Our belief is that we can create incredible things in harmony with nature, rather than destroying it, and in doing so redefine our relationship with life on this planet.’

That’s right. Cruz Foam isn’t packaging. It’s bigger than packaging.

Most packaging, unfortunately, lasts forever. But Cruz Foam doesn’t. It decomposes. It returns to the earth, like nature would have intended. Largely due to the fact that Cruz Foam is made of, well, nature. As in Food waste. That’s right. Food waste. The stuff we don’t eat. Or in the case of farmers, food that never ships. Millions of tons of both are produced everyday. And now, it can turn into something wonderful. Something useful, Something we’ve all been waiting for.

To tell this story, we are at Climate Week in NYC this week letting everyone know that food is not just food anymore. It holds the potential to become something more. It holds the potential to become Cruz Foam. And while Cruz Foam was created to replace packaging, we should never think of it that way. Because it’s not packaging. It will disappear, it's Cruz Foam.

'Cruz Foam produces an innovative material in the world of packaging: an eco-friendly foam that can replace polystyrene and which as a result promises to make the packaging sector more ecological. Since being founded in 2017, the company has grown, and obtained significant funding and now John Felts is in Italy to propose his innovative material. This is where EconomyUp met him to listen to his story: a story of innovation, but also of passion and sacrifice. In fact, at the start he was forced to find a second job as a home pizza delivery boy to make ends meet.'

With the proliferation of plastic packaging alternatives, the question quickly becomes which block and brace solution is right for your products? The first consideration is, unsurprisingly, what you are shipping — is it precision electronics with delicate components, or food items that must be protected from contamination? In many cases, form will follow function in your choices.

Amazon Robotics implemented Cruz Foam solutions to achieve this balance:

“With our commitment to eliminate single-use plastic in our supply chain, we are excited to see the performance we have been able to achieve with industrial-level protective packaging designed by Unified2 using compostable Cruz Foam,” said Minh Le, Senior Packaging Engineer, Amazon Robotics. “We are looking forward to our continued work on expanding the application of sustainable materials in our supply chain.”

As consumer demand for sustainability rises and regulations tighten, companies are abandoning plastic foams and switching to more sustainable alternatives.

A quick reality check: The packaging you use for an average of 10 minutes shouldn’t stick around in our environment for over 500 years… 😵‍💫😥

Plastic is all around us, yet we rarely stop to consider its lasting impact, whether it’s a morning coffee to-go or the bag of veggies we grab at the grocery store. Though plastic has only been widely used for the past 60-70 years, it has revolutionized everything from packaging to product design. But this innovation comes at a steep environmental cost.

Plastic’s durability, once seen as an advantage, is now a burden. Almost every piece of plastic ever created still exists in some form today. Take a look at how long some of these common items take to decompose:

🛒 Plastic bag: 20 years
☕️ To-go coffee cup: 30 years
🧋 Plastic straw: 200 years
🥤 6-pack plastic rings: 400 years
☕️ Coffee pod: 500 years
❄️ EPS cooler: 500+ years

The good news is that solutions to these massive problems already exist. The next crucial step is mass adoption and scalability. Help us spread the word about sustainable alternatives and their positive impact.

Are we at the tipping point of a reimagined consumer-goods market? “The era of businesses depending on oil-based materials such as expanded polystyrene or expanded polyethylene foam for packaging is coming to a screeching halt,” Felts told The BiGS Fix. “These materials pose significant environmental hazards, and there is a growing consumer demand for more sustainable alternatives.”

There’s a growing belief that business people could make a lot of money if they could change how consumers “consume.” Harvard Business School research suggests that persuading consumers to discard a throw-away mentality may represent a business opportunity worth “trillions of dollars.”

Ever wonder how much of your plastic waste actually gets recycled?🌍 In just six decades, we've piled up over 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic. While production has doubled since 2000, recycling hasn’t kept up—leaving us with a massive waste problem. The US alone generates 40 million tons of plastic annually, but less than 10% gets recycled. Most ends up in landfills or incinerators.

The Solution? Compostable, earth-friendly materials like Cruz Foam offer a sustainable alternative, breaking down naturally and reducing our global plastic crisis. 🌱
