INDIAN VILLAGE – NEW MEXICO STATE FAIR - EXPONM 2026
The Indian Village at the New Mexico State Fair Founded in 1881 holds a historic distinction as the first state fair exhibition space in the United States solely devoted to Native American culture. Operating out of its dedicated plaza at Expo New Mexico in Albuquerque, the village serves as a vibrant, living hub for traditional Pueblo dances, Music, Indigenous performances, Pow Wow Exhibition, Arts & Crafts vendors and authentic award-winning Food Vendors .

Early Origins: The World's Fairs and Territorial Fairs
The concept of the Indian Village traces its roots to nineteenth-century exhibition trends. Historically, world's fairs frequently featured "Indian villages" where Indigenous peoples demonstrated traditional crafts and performed dances. However, these early iterations reflected colonial attitudes; non-Native organizers designed them to portray Native Americans as a disappearing past while celebrating white industrial progress.

Albuquerque hosted its first Territorial Fair in 1881. Promoting a temporary Indian village near what is now Old Town, organizing races and dances meant to showcase New Mexico's Indian Pueblo Culture and influence.

The 1960 Shift: Reclaiming the Narrative
The modern Indian Village at the state fairgrounds took shape thanks to a major shift toward self-determination. Following World War II, a growing population of urban Native Americans in Albuquerque began taking on civic leadership roles.

In 1960, these leaders founded the New Mexico Council of American Indians, a pan-Indigenous organization. One of their primary initiatives was to create an Indian Village at the newly relocated fairgrounds—but with a crucial difference: Native people would build, manage, and operate it themselves. The council proposed using the money raised from the village's food and craft vendors to fund higher education scholarships for Native students.
While state fair officials provided the physical space, they did not offer financial support, prompting the Council to successfully build and manage the venue entirely on their own.

The Indian Village Today
Today, the Indian Village (145 years since its first exposition at Albuquerque’s Old Town)remains one of the most popular and enduring highlights of the 11-day state fair. It operates as an authentic space of cultural preservation, pride, and community celebration. Families from various Pueblos and Southwestern Native communities gather in the plaza to honor performing relatives, share traditional meals, and host major public events like the annual State Fair POW WOW.

Indian Village at the New Mexico State fair (ExpoNM) is a living monument of the endurance and cultural heritage of the Pueblo people, showcasing the strength of the generational heritage of pueblo life.

CELEBRATING LABOR DAY 2026- HONORING ALL THOSE THAT HAVE TO WORK FOR A LIVING - Are you part of the 99 ? Native Media Network

Dear Friends:
A lot has been said about the 1% and the affluent people over the past year.

Imagine a world of not having to work for a living, and your skills at planting, hunting, building, weaving, and creativity were enough to provide for your family, neighbors and community and you had plenty of time to celebrate the earth, your ancestors, tell stories, educate your kids, dance, sing …..

Believe it or not that is what being indigenous is all about, providing Food, Shelter and Fiber to enjoy the spiritual side of life.

IT EXISTED PRIOR TO THE COLONIAL ONSLAUGHT and the INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

I often get criticized by telling people that if you punch a time card, you are enslaved to a system.

“THINK ABOUT IT” .

Labor day was legislated to honor the workers that lost their lives in a fire at the Triangle Shirt waist fire.

(Look it up at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triangle_Shirtwaist_Factory_fire . It is an interesting story of Labor and resistance to the existing usurious labor conditions.

WHAT HAPPENED ?
Politicians, Financiers, and Corporations found that Labor could be squeezed while the wealthy made more money.
The Trickle Down Theory of Economics was introduced so that the Wealthy would benefit from the economy, if they had more wealth.
Taxation was the key. Tax rates plummeted from 70% at the top rate to today with the tax loop holes the wealthy individuals and Corporations pay less than 15% for their share.

Some of the biggest offenders like Amazon, Apple, Alphabet, Meta, Tesla, Walmart, pay 0% with the money transferred to Off Shore Accounts .

Income generated by taxation to keep the government and social programs running no longer covers the costs, so we are being forced to borrow money with interest to sustain its operation.
The USA is currently $40 TRILLION IN DEBT AND PAYS OUT $1 TRILI0N IN INTEREST EVERY YEAR.

The Government is spending $6.3 Trillion and expects to receive $4.5 trillion in taxes that is $1.8 trillion shortfall.

The solution offered by the right-wing administration is to cut benefits that sustain the Laborers to keep the wealthy going. WRONG ANSWER.

The ONLY answer to relieve the current economic woes is to raise taxes on the wealthy and collect taxes from the biggest corporations that pay next to nothing.

The taxation during Pres. Eisenhower’s post WWII administration was 90% at the top. What followed was the greatest economic boom of the 50’s and 60’s that the US economy made it into a World Super Power.

I like simple - Increased taxes on the Wealthy and Corporations & Increase benefits to Labor = Economic Prosperity

NO POLITICS INTENDED, but RESIST – Make Corporations and the Wealthy accountable for equitable wage distribution - VOTE !!!!

“There is No Power, Like the Power of the People, When the Power of the People is Unleashed”.

INCREASED TAXES ON THE WEALTHY + INCREASED BENEFITS TO LABOR = ECONOMIC PROSPERITY
The solution offered by the current administration is to cut benefits to the Laborers to keep the wealthy going. WRONG ANSWER.

CELEBRATE LABOR DAY !!!!! The Way of the Ancestors
