Three Chatham County elementary schools were given new names in 1958. Among the names changed, are those of two Negro schools.
The Powell Laboratory school at Thunderbolt was renamed the Sol C. Johnson elementary school in honor of the deceased editor of The Savannah Tribune, an outstanding civic and church leader and grand secretary of the
Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, Jarisdiction of Georgia, for over fifty years.
The West Savannah school which is located on Delyons street, was given the name of the Moses J. Jackson elementary school. The late Mr. Jackson was a leader in the West Savannah district, a high official in the Yorkrite Masons and very prominent in civic affairs affecting his community. He was often referred to as "The Mayor of West Savannah."
The other school named by the board was that located at Wilmington Island which was given the name of the May duBignon Howard elementary school.
